  1. Just done a Tesco run... Decided to try a Tesco 10yo Islay single malt. Islay is a protected name, as is "single malt". That means it's a 10yo whisky from one of the 8 distilleries on the island. Now, I like every Islay whisky so it's going to be something I like at £10 cheaper. Also, it's like a late Christmas present as I get to experiment and guess what brand is hidden behind the Tesco label!

It looks like my local Tesco does not do this or has sold out already. Very much not impressed.

  2. 90% probability Bowmore

    10% probability Bruichladdich

It's the sweet aftertaste, almost sherry like, that decided it for me. Very happy with that as a £21, 10yo Islay single malt. Clearly not in the standard of the older whiskies but a good peer of every other 10yo Islay malt

Now on my shopping list. Thanks Craig.

  3. Japan's Suntory has drowned Diageo’s long-held dream to own Maker’s Mark bourbon with a knockout £9.7billion agreed cash bid for its American owner Beam.

The deal will see ownership of some of Scotland’s best loved whiskys head to Asia. Single malt Laphroaig and Teacher’s are owned by Beam, as is Sauza tequila.

  4. Apparently Foursquare Spiced Rum is reviewed as

"On the palate fresh anise comes through prominently, developing into a complex array of sweet Caribbean spices with great balance between the spices and herbs; finishes with a slight ginger kick."

Maybe it's the ginger kick that I don't like....

  5. I don't mind the occasional Bacardi and coke but I have never been a fan of rum. Over Christmas I got a bottle of Foursquare Spiced rum that a friend said was really nice...I couldn't agree. It's drinkable with a lot of coke or some other mixer but the taste of the rum really is not for me.

I am off on my travels again tomorrow so will be having a nose around the duty free shops at Heathrow for something nice. I've still got lots of Bowmore left from the last trip but I like to expand my horizons. I am meeting up in Prague with a crazy Polish colleague who is bringing some 'proper' Polish vodka with him for me to try.

  6. The offer has been accepted for a house in Battle.  It's got three large bedrooms, two nice reception rooms, a good kitchen, utility room and garden - over four floors and is nicely 'period'.

For the same money in Chalfont St Giles we could get ... nothing.

In other news, we are trying to explain to two boys that just because a place is called 'Battle' that that isn't a call to action.

I am not sure if I should be concerned now that you are going to be less than 50 miles away from me.....Sussex always used to be so nice....

  7. We had one that was passable. Had nothing on.bread made by hand

Agree, I may be a bit odd but I really enjoy making bread when I have the time and the family love sitting down to fresh homemade bread for lunch. I have a bread maker for churning out basic loaves but making bread by hand is far superior IMHO,

Family favourites are baguettes and rosemary foccacia. Serve with cheese and olive oil and balsamic vinegar for dipping the bread in.

  8. I really need a Christmas break. I came back from LA with jet lag and man-flu yet I am straight back to work. I need some time off.

Oh, and if I have one more call with our Russian team I am going to scream down the phone at them. How they hell they ever get anything done with the level of bureaucracy in their country is beyond me....and they keep changing the rules and somehow expect me to know about this by osmosis.

  9. You do get a fair number of email offers. This was one (a 'Double Discount' offer), but normally I make my own selections. I went for this offer because I had already tried and liked the Zinification and the Perez Cruz.

The Gran Villa is best decanted and given a lot of time to breathe (up to 24hrs) as it really does improve and all the flavours come out. Straight out the bottle it can seem a bit bland, although it can vary a bit bottle to bottle.

I've had a few of the Perez Cruz offerings and they are rather nice. I've had a few emails about a white Rioja which I may get a few bottles of soon as my last case of Spanish white from Virgin was superb.

  10. Virgin Wines delivery! Two bottles each of:

Finca los Principes El Rihuelo Rioja 2012

    Zinification Shiraz Zinfandel 2011

Perez Cruz Single Vineyard La Higuera Block 2011

Ariki Reserva Colchagua Carmenère Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Beneficio Cellar Reserve Grenache Shiral Mourvèdre 2011

    Gran Villa Gran Reserva 2002

I am getting daily emails from my Virgin Wine Advisor....I may have to take out a restraining order as this is getting a bit much.

This one is rather nice, had a case of this a while ago - Gran Villa Gran Reserva 2002

  11. I rather like a nice G&T...but then I am a RU fan so that may not come as a surprise to many.

Actually tell a lie, earlier this year I went to a restaurant in Cardiff that had lots of different gins and tonics and made a big deal of pairing these. We tried a few but to be honest none of them were particularly nice.

I will stick with my Bombay Sapphire and tesco tonic water.

  12. I used to drink Jameson's.  I can't remember now if I actually liked it or if I was just being a smug student.  I definitely remember not liking Bushmills.

The client is Irish so I suspect they felt they should give me something 'local' plus the label on the bottle was branded with their logo so I suspect they had  a few cases of this stuff to dish out.

I do not have good memories of Jameson's. A mate and me polished off a bottle of that before a big night out one new year's eve in Nottingham. I ended up dragging him home through the snow and I was not a well person the next day.....possibly food poisoning....

  13. With the Jocks looking for independence it's probably wise that we start trying to produce a few decent whiskys locally rather than having to import them.

At a recent works do I was given a bottle of Bushmills by a client. I am not a big fan of Irish whisky and this really hasn't done much to change that opinion, it's alright but bland and really not very memorable.

  14. I was reviewing the bannings and suspensions list for the last week (3 people got booted for refusing to listen to John's warnings on the England v NZ thread) and I noticed the older list of suspensions, we have one member who was suspended but not banned but his suspension doesn't expire until 11:13 AM on June 4th 5881619.  Another one's suspension ends Aug 11 12002 at 08:59 PM.  Yet another's ends Aug 18 29387 at 12:26 PM

I think they must have really got under John's skin there then...

Hopefully the future generations of these miscreants will behave better and have learnt the lessons of their forefathers!!!

I've just amended my will in case I upset John and find myself in a similar situation so that my great, great, great, great, great grandchildren can carry on where I left off.....

  15. I can't remember where but there are a couple of states that it's far cheaper to buy lots of booze on the way in and "red channel" it through customs with the extra duty rather than buy it in stores in the state.  I can't remember whether it's California or NY.  (That may be a sign of one or more of the following:  Too many work trips abroad, too much booze, or premature senility)

I'm only there for a couple of days on business so won't be getting through too many bottles in that time. May just have a look at Heathrow duty free for a bottle of something nice for over Christmas.

I remember driving up the interstate somewhere in New England and seeing a sign saying Liquor Store next exit. I stopped to have a look and it really was very cheap booze. The bottles of single malt were cheaper there than when I visited the distilleries in Scotland.
