Either interest is dwindling rapidly or these forums are on their last legs.

I think this could be a topic all on its own.

Interest in RL is dwindling at a time when it is far more accessible on TV, just not at our level.

These forums are just a place where people moan, the fun has gone altogether. Even Piggy's Mate has disappeared!!! (Can't believe I've just written that!!, but it's ok he's not on here any longer.....please don't tell him!)

  2. Unable to attend the game, but watched it on YouTube.

Fantastic performance from everyone, Dale was right not to single out one MoM.

That will hurt Batley, not just to lose against the Old Enemy, but to perform so badly.

Hope we can build on this next week against Widnes!

  3. I think some clubs might not make it to the finish line financially, there is a long way to go, and they are spending quite considerable amounts on wages.

People can say what they want about Mark, but he has kept the club afloat and put his hand in his pocket when needed. Not sure some of the other club owners will do the same.

This season is going to be difficult for a lot of clubs including ours.

Kevin posted on the 'Dogs website.

Average attendance was up on previous season, but didn't offset the loss in entrance money.

I gather there was increased sales of food and drink and some additional sponsorship, but still not enough to cover reduced entrance.

    Thank you for the info.

It looks like cheap tickets just don't work, and unfortunately we don't make anything out of additional food sales, only drinks at the bar. So we would find it even tougher.

After everything Kev and the team has put into the club over the last few seasons its a shame.

  5. Just out of interest, how successful was the pricing at our near neighbours last year?

They had a very good season the year before with lots of press coverage and interest from fans, but did that increase home support? And of course revenue/profit? (I'm saying profit with tongue in cheek!)

  6. I think this season, many clubs will find recruitment difficult, as many clubs just don't have the money.

This won't just be a Dewsbury problem.

Players might need to review their wage demands quite significantly.

For owners like Mark Sawyer & Kevin Nicholas there has to be a certain level of hazard perception, maybe both are looking a little further down the line, and at some point at least 1 of them will step back, and pursue interests away from Rugby League, not simply walking away but more a redirection of focus, this quite possibly will happen at Batley before Dewsbury... Unfortunately the future is not very bright below super league and can only get worse unless a formula is found where super league and the championship are split so each competition can call it's own shots, marketing and media under 2 separate entities. While the championship is tied by an umbilical cord of super league it will never flourish in its own right, merely tethered on a life support system for eternity, until eventually it's cut off and withers & dies.

You are bang on the money!

My comments were really made out of frustration at the few voices who always moan about a lack of ambition at our club, when we, along with many others, rely on the cash others/owners are prepared to put in.

With RL in the mess it is, other than mental issues (joke!), I can not understand why Mark or Kevin put their money or time in. Their partners/family must consider it madness!

I'm bloody glad they do, even though this season I've not been able to attend, the alternative of no Dewsbury Rams is unthinkable.

Has big Mark got family members that he'll hand his crown over to, so keeping a succession process in place?

A very good question to ask, not sure if anyone else in Mark's family is interested in Dewsbury. As an investment, it's not a good one.

However, I was told last night that someone squared up to Mark (a so called fan) at the awards night and gave him some abuse, if this is true his family might not be so keen to get involved! If ever!

  9. Spot on Nick!

Mark will have lost a considerable amount of money this season, yet we still hear the "no ambition!" comments on Facebook etc. If anyone has the cash to invest in Dewsbury, I am sure Mark would love to hear from them.

Was heartening to listen to Liam Finn’s enthusiasm for the coming season.

On the flipside it was all negativity from the chairmen. Does he actually like Rugby League??

Probably not, especially if he reads some of the comments on here and Facebook!

OMG and I always thought you were the opposite wit to my half 🤯

    I could be mistaken...

Granted not often, but every now & then, I do make a little sense.

I do try to keep it to a minimum though...😉

  12. "No ref no game"

Bit of a pointless statement, as no players no game!

Even better still, no fans no semi professional club!

The game has been speeded up so much, players and ref's are expected to be super human.

There was a reason we had proper scrums, and a play the ball using your foot (and gaining your feet first), it helped slow down the game and gave defences time to set. And the ref chance to catch his breath, and therefore make less mistakes (hopefully 😀)

This need to speed everything up causes more issues for the ref rather than helping them manage the game.

Going back quite some time, I'm afraid I disagree.

If you went into the club house at Crown Flatt the committee kept themselves hidden away in a private bar which was also used by many of the players. To say that the club was cliquish would be an understatement and, if you had any questions for Tom Clarke the regular response was "What's it got to do with you?"

Maybe, in those times, folk were more likely to be working alongside players so there was a greater familiarity. The decline of most industries has put paid to that.

I do, however, fully agree with you that, if you have a question and can find MS in the bar afterwards, he will be most happy to answer any and all of them.

I'm 56 so my experiences at Crown Flatt were great both as a player and supporter, but doesn't go back quite far enough. I'm sure Piggy's Mate will disagree. 😆

Using the current terms of today, fans, players and the Club don't engage.

I just wish I had the magic formula to change this.

Lots of things were more enjoyable when we were a lot younger HJ.  🙂

I sort of agree, however, the interaction between fans of all ages (home & away) with the players somehow seemed better.

Fans of all ages & players stayed after games, not just for 30 to 60 minutes, and celebrated or commiserated together.

Now the game, and result, is everything.

We moan about the lack of information, but you can ask Mark Sawyer anything in the bar after the game, and he will tell you.

I had quite a conversation about the cost of replacing the fencing at the Bywell Road End, the amount is staggering, eye watering....but it's got to be paid. When you know and understand these sorts of things you feel more connected with the club. Maybe that's what we had!

A few beers and a good time just might be the answer to all our problems
