    Curses, covusxiii, you've rumbled me!

The quarterly magazine NarrowBoat always has the strapline 'The Inland Waterways Heritage Magazine'.  The latest (Spring) edition has a photo-feature of barges at Goole Docks; the colour photos date from 1966.  One of the photo captions describes 'a tug towing a train of nearly 30 pans..' and then adds that they were "..better known as Tom Puddings further along the A&C", which suggests a more localised use of that term than I had realised.

Incidentally, two editions back of the same magazine (Autumn, 2024) had both more 1966 colour pictures from Yorkshire - this time in Selby - and some much older, black and white photos of traffic on the eastern section of the A&C, between Knottingley and Goole.  There is also an official, A&C Navigation picture (in effect, a detailed sketch that has been annotated) describing how the hoists at places like Goole Docks worked, to unload the contents of Tom Puddings into larger, sea-going boats.  Maybe your barge unloader was like that.

I've just Googled- Barge Unloader Ferrybridge.

A feast of Tom Puddings and big machinery!!!

I think Tom Pudding, the legendary Castleford winger of the Northern Union era, used to travel along the Aire & Calder Navigation to get to home ties.

I used to work at Ferrybridge C power station on the Barge Unloader which would lift a 160 tonne barge out of the river and tip the coal into a hopper. The said barges were called Tom Puddings.

I’ve got a Tower Xpress 5 in 1 air fryer that cost £50 that I would definitely recommend too.  It’s the only air fryer I’ve ever had, basically one big mini oven compartment with a number of lattice metal trays and a standard oven tray for the bottom.  It is especially good for meat/fish/chicken and also frozen chips/roast potatoes, basically everything.

My favourite combo is now cooking seasoned fillet steak on one level with frozen thick cut chips below it on another.  The steak comes out medium rare and tender while juice drips through the lattice tray and onto the nicely cooked thick cut chips dripping style.  I used to faff with getting frying pans very hot, oil, sealing the meat etc, but now with one turn of the meat I can get an equal or better result in the air fryer.

It’s quicker, more energy efficient and makes the regular oven less of a used thing.  It’s especially good at Christmas or for a complex meal for giving a quick reliable heating option to be used in tandem with your other appliances.  I was skeptical that air fryers were a bread maker type fad, but they really are good and save a lot of time and stress, but with nicer taste results than the microwave.

Yes, I'm thinking it should be another fad, another appliance gathering dust somewhere but if anyone opens their gob on the subject it's clear I'm just plain wrong. I'll check out the names.

It could be a Mastermind specialist subject this: what combination of subscriptions do you need to watch the rugby and it actually work.

I could half remember something was required but HD+ was beyond me.

There are three possible pubs I need to check out for HD+, then hope football/darts etc isn't on and then hope the landlord isn't a Rah Rah. Sorted.

Watching Aston Villa v Liverpool tonight,  the fans of both teams seem so passionate.  They holler and cry with jubilation as the goals go in, in a very Important match. It seems so important to them and they're having a great time, or are they?

Are you saying the poor dolts have been tricked by hype? IF you could talk to them would you say, " look at the stuff on the pitch it's rubbish, wake up idiots, you shouldn't be enjoying it because it's phoney?"

No, that's a bit extreme but yeah, take the hype/people away and we're stood with two men and a dog.

Partly, football games aren't very interesting in my opinion (look at spurs/man utd). But because of the advertising of the sport, the international game, the marketing, the premier league, and the money, people want to be involved in the sport. In my opinion,  rugby league is a better game on the pitch, but we don't have the other aspects to make it more in the people's eyes.

OK, here's a thing. About 3/4 ish years ago Italy(I think) beat England in some soccer final widely shown on TV which my neighbour showed it at his place to many people.

Can't imagine another sport where this might be replicated.

After the match I suggested that if the very same match was to be magically reanacted on a local pitch the next day then no one would be bothered. Non of us present then would be present the following Sunday.

OK, no one actually argued the toss but I was clearly a ###### for even saying such a thing.

Hype over content doesn't even touch the sides. I see many correspondences in the above posts. Interesting.

Just  looking back to last year and the press release talking about the clampdown at the ptb and there must be a genuine attempt to play it with the foot.
in one and a bit games it’s depressing to see that’s already been forgotten

Unless the ball is clearly played with the foot in which case it is obviously a penalty. Obviously...........   but I don't know why....

Do they often start slow as players are still missing some competive match sharpness?

In my day.... say late 80's into the 90's it seemed to be 3,4 or 5 weeks before things got properly warmed up and reached running temperature.

Then sometime this century things were pretty much hot from the start.

This match would be pretty much unthinkable at any time of the season when I was a pup, nevermind first match.

  9. Thing is Cas had a couple of chances where it looked easier to score than not. That they didn't was great work from Bradford and it swung the game in their favour.

And Well Done Bradford No.10, stayed involved and forced the last try out wide for the conversion.

Another yard or two and .....?
