I know it's minor in the scheme of things but Wales need to be offering S4C at least one broadcast quality home game in both men's and women's.

They've Welsh speakers on their staff so they can even handle comms if required.

100% agreed on this - Amazon were so surprised by the Welsh language rugby viewing figures on S4C that they took the rights themselves and broadcast the recent autumn internationals in English and Welsh. I’d imagine this has left a gap for S4C that WRL could try to fill

  2. I live between Arsenal tube station and the steps up to the stadium. About an hour before the match I had to check I hadn’t got the kickoff time wrong as it was so quiet outside the front door. Even compared to a midweek Arsenal cup match it was quiet. I struggle to believe there were 40k there…

Now, with my Mr. Optimistic head on, I think that the club tier seats are only used for Arsenal games. Unlike Wembley, I am not sure club membership includes games outside the Premier League. I also optimistically seem to recall reading quite early on that the corporate tickets had gone down very well. Given that middle section has 152 executive boxes, we can but hope. To get a spot in one of the Club seats and the Club Bar is going at £245+ VAT for the semi-final!

You can buy club level seats on the website - £96 for blocks 59 and 66

I think the Premium Seats that are listed are club level as well, just closer to half way - £132 for blocks 60, 61 & 64

Tbf I've seen zero advertising locally at Angel, King's Cross, Highbury, Holloway Road etc. I'd have no clue it was on without being an RL fan.

Agreed - I can see the entrance to The Emirates from my front door, you wouldn’t know a World Cup quarter final is going to be hosted. Literally tens of thousands of Arsenal fans walk down my road on a match day… seems like the lowest hanging fruit of advertising

  5. This may have already been covered, but I’m not scrolling back to find it…

Who are the most likely pairing for the Emirates semi final? I live basically next door to the stadium, just trying to gauge what tier of ticket I can justify

The top NRL players are the highest paid in the world

    Fact

The NRL salary cap in moving up to 11 million aussie dollars next season

Most top earning super rugby players earn a maximum of £400,000 dollars a year way below the NRL

So losing players is only likely to be to france of japan

Not sure this is right… a quick search gave me Daly Cherry-Evans as top paid NRL player on AUD1.2m, which is less than £700k.

There are at least 10 union players paid more than this - all of the players in the ‘top 10’ lists I found were on £750k upwards.

  7. I’m interested in the make-up of the Eagles squad.

How many are local (Scottish) ‘league first’ players? Or are most union and league players, or league players from the traditional heartlands?

I’d imagine it is a mix, but would be interesting to have a rough breakdown

With so many leagues and in-fighting in america it's hard to get behind american RL with any real enthusiasm. I think the new North American Rugby League might have potential but we will have to see where it goes, there seems to be a lot of buzz about it. Maybe having more international games in america might be a good idea and the possibility of having league games over there.

Does there seem to be a lot of buzz?

The schedule they released has them kicking off in 11 days. When was the last time NARL posted anything on social media? Who is Team 6? Do New York exist? Do Toronto and Cleveland have squads? Why can’t I buy tickets?

I don’t think NARL will happen at all if I’m honest. I certainly wouldn’t describe what we’re seeing at the moment as buzz.

I think many RL players seem to finish University and then disperse all over the country and unfortunately forget about RL to some extent. As I alluded to previously we had a cracking team and our players with RU backgrounds were fundamental in that. They loved the game but to the best of my knowledge every single one left University and never played the sport again and had little to do with it. The University scene is great but unfortunately for the players not going back to RL heartlands after there is often little to keep them within the game. If they go working in somewhere like London it is far easier, and often more worthwhile both financially and from a jobs/networking point of view, to join a local RU club. RU then reaps the benefits again of any career path. At best the RL alternative is a sporadic fixture list of a low standard, usually playing 2nd fiddle to a RU club at a RU ground.

My dad did exactly this - played for Wales at a students RLWC then left university and never played league again

I know of two rugby league people who’ve sent quite serious emails sharing their concerns. Raiders’ response to both has been quite flippant, almost laughing the matter off with ‘everything will be OK, we own our own ground!’

They recently announced they’re going to pay more notice to the dozen or so community clubs in wales to strengthen partnerships they’d previously neglected , however many see this as their reaction to being unable to sign quality players from elsewhere I.e the unfortunate Plan B.

    I’ll be honest - they’re terribly run.

Do they own it? I always assumed it was the football club or council that did. In fact looks to me like the council do - https://www.llanellitowncouncil.gov.uk/index.php?id=112

They are aiming to recruit 10-12 player from Cornwall, not the entire Squad, they will bring in some good players from established League teams, and maybe (Covid permitting) some Pacific Islanders.

‘Aiming’ and ‘will’ suggests none of this has happened yet? Cutting it fine…

I would have been looking at any of Portsmouth, Reading, Norwich, Stoke, Derby - appreciate it's all pins in maps but I wouldn't start with Bristol or Cornwall.

Have seen Derby suggested a few times but don’t think it would work - there isn’t a suitable facility for a team attracting ~5k people. If I was looking at the East Midlands I’d go with Nottingham - Lady Bay would be ideal to start and could move up to the Notts County stadium if successful.

I went to university in Norwich and think there suffers from the same issue - I don’t know of any facilities other than the Canaries ground

It's a 6 hour drive to Perpignan and a 7 hour drive to Toulouse. The longets journey in Elite 1 would be Avingnon at just under 8:30.

In Elite 2, the longest journey would be Lyon at 12 hours but would also feature a drive to Toulon at 10 hours.

To get from Valencia to the French border is around 5 and half hours drive - I assume a little slower on a coach and worse if there's traffic. That means, at best, you're looking at 6 hour drives to games - it'd be like having Newcastle and Newquay in the same league.

8 hour coach ride also means that you're either leaving at around 5am to arrive around 1pm for a 2:30 kickoff and assuming you get on the road at 5pm (leaving very little time to finish the game and get some food) you'll be getting home at 1am. If you stayed overnight, your costs would rise.

I'm not saying that you're wrong that it might be trying to attract UK fans to travel and that it might not be sustainable - I don't personally think the RFL structure is the right decision long term for Spanish clubs (a proper Spanish domestic scene would be the best thing in my mind) but at the moment there's no good competition for them to be in. If they go semi-pro and the rest of the Spanish clubs in the domestic comp they're forming now stay amateur then there's no competition. If they go to France, there's a huge travel burden for not much return. As strange as it sounds, the RFL system isn't strictly worse than their other options, and has the upside of the chance to play in comps like the Challenge Cup and, if they do well and invest right, the Championship and Super League.

I think it highlights just how much work is needed to develop RL on the continent - apart from a few small pockets, there's no infrastructure to allow clubs to grow in other countries.

Sorry, why would they have to drive? For most of them they could fly into Barcelona, but there’s also flights from Valencia to Lyon or Marseille.
