    Cornwall?

    Averaging substantially less than 500.

Some of these numbers are plucked out of thin air.

Having attended every Cornwall home match (and a fair few away), I can say with conviction that average attendance was 'substantially greater'.

The assertion that there were only 350 present for the final home match of the season against Rochdale is so absurd as to barely warrant dignifying with a response.

Whatever happens it won’t please all champ or League 1 clubs, but champ clubs hold the cards because their is more of them, so whatever is decided it will be champ clubs that  decide it, same as SL clubs do with 2 votes.

Indeed they do, though I suspect not all of them see eye to eye on the matter.

Would that view of the best for the game as a whole coincidentally be what is best for League 1 and therefore Oldham?

The argument seems to boil down to L1 being unsustainable with 8 clubs.

If we are to assume that this is the case, that might imperil the continued existence of certain great old clubs and promising new ones.

I think we can all agree that such a scenario would be extremely bad news.

If the current situation continues then some of those Championship clubs are being extremely shortsighted because in 2025 it could be them who are in the 8 team league. It only takes one bad season.

This. 100%. The lack of self-awareness is troubling.

They also expressed concerns about travel to Cornwall etc, the RFL currently offer some financial support for travel to Toulouse, but this wouldn't be forthcoming for matches in the far south west.

Cornwall are up & down the M5/M6 every fortnight without so much as a grumble. A single trip down to the other end of a modestly-sized country should not be an existential threat to club finances.

Maybe so I don’t know tbh, but if they didn’t lay the plan down before a vote there is something seriously wrong especially if they just said do you want these 9 clubs or not?.

I don't think they even needed to ask the question as the clubs would have already known it was coming for a while. And prepared accordingly.

Still, I suspect a few Championship sides are quietly accepting of the fundamental idea.

You’re not getting the point are you? If champ clubs accommodate you some champ clubs could go under.

Hopefully not. The season may mean each club living within their means viz-a-viz pre-existing central funding. This would obviously result in disparities from top to bottom, but every side should exit 2024 financially alive.

Then expect another 3 clubs to disappear in the next 12 months and the game shrink even smaller. Protectionism at its finest.

I think we are at cross purposes. I genuinely believe the best way through is to bring League 1 and the Championship together. In fact, it is the *only* viable option now.

The post merely alluded to treading carefully in the process.

You have to remember though champ clubs have probably sold 80% or more of their season tickets for next season for a certain amount of games, having more games won’t cover staff costs or player costs unless you get 1k away fans which barring a few teams won’t happen.

This is a very valid point. I would hope, however, that any 'merger' of divisions would prioritise these concerns, not least from the POV of player welfare.

The gulf between champ and league 1 barring one or two clubs is huge like it is from champ to SL. Can you imagine say us playing teams like Oldham etc be cricket scores, same as saints playing a swinton etc.

I would rather see a season or two of cricket scores than watch an untenable third tier collapse taking great old clubs and promising new ones with it.

  10. League One and Championship have to come together now. No need for teams to play each other twice - just once will do.

Championship clubs will have to come to terms with the change, and L1 clubs that they won't get any more cash than they would have for the 2024 season.

Sure, there will be a gulf between top and bottom to begin with, but the survival prospects of many clubs in both heartlands and the hinterlands will improve.

  11. Combining the remainder of League 1 and the Championship is surely now the only viable option (even if it means applying the levels of funding that would have existed otherwise for the year).

No need for home and away, just all clubs play each other once in the 2024 season.

Yes, there will be blow-out scores, but they will be survivable.

No point keeping it in London and not playing at Wembley.

dublin and Cardiff would be less appealing than Wembley.

Murrayfield is a good option as a backup but I feel that the final should be held in England if possible.

The Olympic Stadium would be better, in my opinion. Went for the recent Diamond League event and it had a better feel than Wembley - there's something wrong with that stadium that I can't quite put my finger on.

However, if Wembley is to be it then the RFL needs to address the 'upper tier' issue. Give family tickets to London's most disadvantaged kids based on indices of multiple deprivation. No one loses and everyone wins.
