If Perth want to blow the opposition out of the water, and ensure a place they should create an agreement (long term) with the PNG government, PNGRL and Corporate environment and play up to four games in Port Moresby.

    The colours match perfectly.
Pirates has a ring for both West Coast and PNG (Png could easily create PNG Pirates merch) PNG should be prominent on the Jersey.
The mining industry is present in both. If PNG were to create incentive it would also encourage investment.
The casual fan base would be mammoth (much larger than any present NRL team) 10 Mill - PNG / WA - 2.6 million.
The PNG and WA player pathways could complement to create a formidable player line
The Hunters in the QLD Cup and another in the NSW Cup
They should also create a player pathway with the South African Rugby League (there are THOUSANDS of 'Rugby' loving South Africans in Perth.

No club in their right mind would take nearly a quarter of their home games to another venue let alone Port Moresby.

Linking up with the PNG hunters is a good idea though.

Further expansion in SE Queensland does raise the question of where will they play.  The only suitable stadium for anything other that marginal games is suncorp and it is already struggling with dates as it hosts two NRL, one Superrugby and 1 A league team as well as various other events and concerts.

What with the population explosion in the western corridor and maybe even a future A-league expansion bid from the area a new stadium could potentially be built in either Logan Or Ipswich.

Brisbane are also hosting the 2032 summer Olympics as well so again potentially some new stadiums could be getting built or upgraded in the area.

Theres also the QE II stadium which was the old broncos ground.

Does anyone here follow the NRL reddit page? Found this interesting picture of Australia's average match attendance for all the different codes of football. I never realised how hard Union has fallen off a cliff

It’s very interesting to see the decline of super rugby in Australia and the breaking up of the competition as a whole with South African teams going their own way and the solo Japanese and Argentinian clubs being dropped.

I don’t follow club RU at all but from what I believe the NZ based sides would pump the Australian based sides 9 times out of 10 which led to both poor crowds and viewing figures in Australia and maybe even NZ.

No doubt that the clubs were haemorrhaging serious amounts of $$$$

My understanding is that the owner of the Perth Glory football team is putting a bid together and also a group called the West Coast Pirates. There's also talk that the people behind the Perth Reds will bid.

These would all be separate bids asides from the Bears

My god that’s 4 bids from the same city.

Talk about increasing your chances. surely 1 of them must win!!!

Being sceptical I`ve asked the same question and why are they so shy about making it public. The reason the W.A. poster I alluded to gave was that after the last debacle about when promises were made about admitting a W.A. team and nothing eventuated they aren`t in hurry to show their hand this time, publicly at least.

He does keep mentioning three names though. One the bloke who owns Cash Converters, Brian Cummins, another bloke called Puddy, and the other name eludes me. Cumins sponsored Perth Reds and still sponsors W.A. Rugby League and some of their junior representative teams.

Isn’t the pledged $15 million coming from the bears side?

Also are any of those blokes you mentioned the guy that bankrolls the western force?

There`s a lot of people who`d like to see the Bears back and the feel-good factor would be huge and V`landy`s knows this.

According to an Aussie poster living in Perth the majority of people associated with W.A. Rugby League have no problem with adopting the Bears branding, co-ordinating pathways, some North Sydney League`s club funding and maybe a trial game played at North Sydney oval, but that`d be it. They are very keen to get a team in the NRL. He also states that any perception of a Sydney team based out of Perth would be a disaster in the making.

My take on the latest developments is that the W,A. Gov`t. are pretty keen to see if they can do it without North Sydney being involved at all. They`re going to see if having such a high-powered Government body involved will flush out an investor or a consortium to allow this.

I`m positive V`landy`s won`t mind either way, he can save the ace up his sleeve that is the Bears` readmission for another headline or for somewhere else.

Who are the people putting $15 million on the table mate?

Really interesting to see the Govt. reference growing female sports participation as one of the rationale for engaging in this, with the NRL being on the leading edge in terms of "men's" sports building a women's competition. This is a key aspect in why its important for us to lean into the women's game, and build it up. Aside from being a good thing in itself, it ticks a lot of boxes for government and related bodies funding decisions.

    Exactly.

    It’s a perfect example of a win-win scenario.

Norths bring nothing to the table and I have no idea why they're getting involved with Perth. I've even heard that they may facilitate a NZ2 bid.

I can only imagine that the NRL or PVL is pushing this onto Perth for political reasons, otherwise it just doesn't make sense

They’ve admitted they’ll talk to anyone and everyone.

I guess the bears officials will say that they bring the name, tradition, 10’s thousands of fans and $15 million in pledged investment.

NZ is the best place for the next expansion team but there doesn't seem to be a bid in place so that's off the table. Perth have gone to a lot of trouble to put a strong bid forward and it ticks many boxes for me. Adelaide could be an option somewhere down the line but behind a few others at the minute. PNG would be well supported but there would be some negative aspects that will delay that. The Central Coast would be good as a dual franchise with a Sydney club, like St G and Ill.

For me Perth now. NZ next and some encouragement from the NRL for a bid to be put together. A time frame would surely help potential bidders.

The last thing the NRL needs is another dual franchise like that of the st George Illawarra dragons.

either have it in one location or not at all as all this trying to be all things and pleasing everyone ends up being a complete mess and pleasing nobody.

Sorry but completely disagree apart from your points on Perth.

There's no strong argument that the Bear's returning would add any value to the Nrl. V'landys has already said the Sydney market is saturated. There isn't the corporate $$ in Gosford either. Never going to happen.

There's minimal presence of Nrl in Adelaide and Png is a 3rd world country with major societal issues so basing an Nrl team there wouldn't ever work.

If Perth is no.18 then Nz2 and south west Brisbane will be the choices if they expand further.

Queensland is a tough sell unfortunately as any further and future additions to the NRL from that state will be seen by some as not proper expansion even though it has a large population and large future projected growth especially in south East Queensland.

Not to mention the fact that RL is the #1 code in the state. For me south east Queensland could easily accommodate another franchise in either the city of Brisbane or the western corridor covering the cities of Logan and Ipswich.

This could potentially give you a nice spread of teams covering the largest population centres with the Brisbane broncos, Gold Coast titans, moreton bay dolphins and then either another city of Brisbane team or Ipswich/Logan team along with the North Queensland cowboys.

I completely disagree. After the Bears' departure, Manly are the only Sydney club north of the Harbour Bridge, where most of the wealthy people in Sydney live.

If Manly moved, it would leave all the northern beaches to rugby union and AFL.

It's important that Manly is a strong club with a modern stadium.

Of course with the bears no longer playing out of the north Sydney oval in the NRL the manly sea Eagles are vital for the NRL to have a presence in the northern Sydney region.

I was talking about the time shortly after the end of the super league war in which imo the bears should have represented the north Sydney region in the NRL and the sea Eagles should have moved to and represented the central coast region.

I would have also relocated the balmain tigers to Brisbane and merged them with the Queensland cup side East’s tigers now currently known as the Brisbane tigers. I would have also merged the bulldogs and magpies clubs to form the western bulldogs eventually playing out of a new stadium in Liverpool but that’s for another discussion and topic.

    Rather PNG to be honest.

PNG’s problems are far deeper than just the lack of genuine NRL standard players for any potential NRL side to draw upon.

You’ve got to factor in the high crime and poverty rates and the fact that PNG is a 3rd world country which will no doubt trigger a lot of woke people but unfortunately these are all undeniable facts.

There is a good case for the Bears to return and to play it's home games on the Central Coast with a couple each year at the North Sydney Oval.

But Perth has to be a standalone club, not a joint venture.

Perth's return to top-level competition is long overdue.

After that, the candidates have to be Adelaide, Christchurch, Gosford (ie the Bears) and Port Moresby.

Manly should have relocated to the central coast but that’s never going to happen now what with all the redevelopment of brookvale oval and their centre of excellence.

    What are their demands ?

Reading that article it does state playing upto 6 games at North Sydney Oval which is way too many,I’d cap it at 2 with Manly being an  obvious one.

I could be way off the mark here but I’m sure I read that the Perth based club would be known only as “The Bears” similar to “The Dolphins.”

Bears officials claim that they’ve got something like $20million financial backing if given the Green light and you can bet that they’d like to keep the north’s colours as well as the logo and as many “home” games to be held at the north Sydney oval as possible.

Personally I think they only deserve 1 “home” game at the north Sydney oval considering the amount of away games that would be played in Sydney.

  15. I don’t know what else Perth would have to do to be awarded an NRL franchise as they practically tick all the boxes for being ripe for expansion.

    Big city.

    New Expansion area territory.

past history of attracting big crowds both at domestic and rep level.

Well established and historical grassroots RL.

Decent standard stadium with pledged government support for redevelopment.

Pledged financial support from the western Australian government.
