Goole Vikings looking to strengthen after Challenge Cup triumph

GOOLE VIKINGS earned a magnificent second-round Challenge Cup 17-10 victory at London Broncos on Saturday – the club’s first official game.

They now await the visit of Super League’s Wakefield Trinity in just under two weeks’ time for a third-round clash.

Coach Scott Taylor was understandably jubilant in victory but he is already looking at strengthening his forward pack in the opening weeks of their maiden season in League One after they suffered two significant injuries in their pre-season clash at Featherstone Rovers.

“We picked up a couple of injuries in the middle against Fev and feel we are a bit light there anyway, so we will look to strengthen there and an outside back would also give us a bit of cover.

“Joe Phillips, from Leeds Rhinos, lost his footing and hurt his knee, so we could lose him for a couple of months, and Lennon Bursell has broken his thumb in two places, so that could be eight to twelve weeks also.

“We got the nod from the RFL in September and since then we have had to move fast in getting the squad together and putting the rest of the staff in place.

“We have a squad of 24 and are happy about where they are, so we said we’d go into the games against Featherstone and London and then look at where we are and maybe look to bring in one or two new faces in February.”
