Green keen for a less painful victory in 2014

He was arguably the hero of Wigan Warriors’ 2013 Grand Final success – and Warriors half-back Blake Green is keen for more of the same today against St Helens – but hopefully with less pain involved.

Green suffered a horrific facial injury in the early stages of the win against Warrington last year, but stayed on the field to inspire the Warriors to a famous victory.

And the Aussie is hopeful of victory again today against the Saints, but wants to head back home to the NRL with only a Grand Final ring – not a physical trophy to show for his excursions!

“The first time I got the ball I took a punch to the head and I was on the ground,” he said.

“Pat Richards said to me ‘tough people win these games and if you hang tough we’ll win it’.

“For the 30 seconds when I was contemplating how I was feeling, I knew it would be selfish of me to go off the field.

“I wouldn’t let the team and the coach down. My vision was impaired but it was a special moment when we won.

“I’m very proud of how we won last year. Hopefully we can do the same thing this time – without me getting hit.”
