Hull KR boss Willie Peters responds to NRL speculation

HULL KR head coach Willie Peters has responded to NRL speculation linking the Australian with a move to Perth Bears from 2027.

Peters’ name has been mentioned despite Leeds Rhinos boss Brad Arthur and Warrington Wolves’ number one Sam Burgess also being linked with the Bears for 2027.

The rise of the former halfback has been sensational after taking over Rovers ahead of the 2023 Super League season.

That year, Peters led the Robins to a top-four Super League finish as well as a Challenge Cup Final and has since established the East Yorkshire club as silverware contenders.

NRL journalist David Riccio told the Vossy and Brandy Breakfast Show that Peters, who has just Rovers to a Challenge Cup Final against Warrington Wolves, is a perfect candidate to take over at the Bears.

Riccio said: “There’s a smokey and I think it’s Willie Peters. He has the stocks and the goods to be an NRL coach.

“There’s Sam Burgess and Wayne Bennett in the mix which has some serious pulling power.”

Peters, however, is under contract with Rovers until the end of the 2028 Super League season after signing a new long-term deal last year.

Now he has responded to the speculation, saying: “It’s out of my control. I’ve always said that if a chance in the NRL came up at some stage then I would certainly look at it.

“But my whole focus is on what I am doing now which is getting ready for the Challenge Cup Final in three weeks’ time but more importantly the game against Huddersfield this weekend.

“I’ve spoken internally about that (an NRL opportunity) and I’ve shared that with the media but my focus is Hull KR.”
