Joe Mellor believes there is a secret to their success – their pack.
Mellor and halfback partner Kevin Brown have come in for plenty of praise as their early season form has sent the Vikings to the top of Super League.
They will go two points clear at the top with victory against Hull FC tonight, with Widnes searching for their fifth win in six games. To do so, the Vikings forwards will have to overcome a dominant Airlie Birds pack that has also raked in plaudits this season.
However, Mellor is hopeful that his own set of forwards will receive the recognition they deserve if they come out on top tonight.
“We can’t play off them if they’re not playing well,” Mellor told TotalRL.
“I don’t think anyone has congratulated them up to now. If they front up this week against this big, tough side I think they’ll get that recognition.”

The 25-year old thinks tonight’s televised clash is their toughest game so far this season.
“We’ve played Huddersfield and Leeds, and although we put in good performances they had a lot of injuries. This Hull FC team that we’re playing on Thursday will be our biggest test. They have a lot of good players to be fair and we’ll have to control their middle. They put them on the front foot so we’ll have to stand up to them.
“We know people don’t like coming to our ground, so we know if we can win every game at home that will help us.”
