SHEFFIELD EAGLES might have lost the services of experienced halfback Anthony Thackeray through retirement, but the standards he set will remain a yardstick at the South Yorkshire club.
That’s the pledge of Joel Farrell, the 38-year-old’s successor as skipper, who is going into his seventh season since switching from Batley and is eager to help the club return to the play-offs after narrowly missing out on a second successive appearance in them last year.
The Jamaica international second rower, 30, has been given the armband by new coach Craig Lingard and is keen to repay his faith.
“I played alongside Thacks at Dewsbury as well as for Sheffield, and he’s been a real mentor for me over the years as well as a great captain,” explained the son of former Sheffield forward Anthony Farrell.
“I have a lot to thank him for, and I think plenty of other players would say that as well, because he’s always been willing and happy to pass on tips and advice.
“Hopefully I can pick up where he left off, and along with the other experienced lads we have here, bring the best out of the younger players, because we have some talent and potential at this club.”
