Leigh Leopards forward Tom Amone stood down after failing to leave field against St Helens for a HIA

LEIGH LEOPARDS forward Tom Amone has been stood down by the Super League club after failing to leave the field against St Helens last weekend for a Head Injury Assessment.

Amone went into a heavy tackle with Saints’ Matty Lees, with the Tongan prop looking visibly groggy following that incident.

However, Amone stayed on the field instead of leaving the field for a HIA despite Sky Sports commentators drawing attention to the event.

Now, he will not play for the Leopards against Castleford Tigers tonight after being stood down after collaboration between the governing body and Leigh, according to Sky Sports commentator Stuart Pike.

“The RFL provides a supportive role to clubs and club medical staff to ensure players are well looked after,” a statement by the governing body said.

“In this instance, Leigh Leopards have worked collaboratively with the RFL, reviewed footage from last Friday’s game provided as part of the concussion spotter trial and made the decision themselves to stand down Tom Amone, putting the player at the centre of their decision making.

“The RFL is extremely supportive of the Leigh medical team’s decision and of the professionalism they have shown around the situation. We recognise the challenges during the heat of a game for medical staff and are continually evolving how we look after players as is evidenced by the ongoing trial.

“Currently we try to support medical staff by sending any possible concussions as clips to all medical staff to support their post-match analysis and review. We are continually looking to progress and develop the ways we can support our players in the league and medical staff.”
