Castleford Tigers coach Daryl Powell launched a scathing attack on some of his players after their 38-28 defeat to Widnes on Thursday night.

The result leaves Cas seriously chasing ground on the top four with just five games left until the split for the Super 8s following a lacklustre 70 minutes in which they left themselves with too much to do despite a spirited fightback in vain in the final 10 minutes.

And Powell said some of his side failed to recognise the enormity of the game and admitted he was frustrated by his side’s inability to perform in the opening 70 minutes.

“It was very poor,” he said. “We put ourselves under so much pressure.

“We only really looked like a team that wanted to win in the last 10 minutes which just wound me up to be honest.

“We started to play with a little bit of smartness and a fair bit of intent that was sadly lacking for the most part.

“Some people need to realise how much it means that game – at home against a team in and around us. It was really disappointing.”
