Praise for Huddersfield Giants youngster George Flanagan despite loss to Leigh Leopards

HUDDERSFIELD coach Luke Robinson was full of praise for youngster George Flanagan following his Super League debut.

Flanagan, who normally operates at fullback, played in the halves in a 24-10 defeat at Leigh after Hull KR opted to recall Danny Richardson from his loan spell.

The 20-year-old son of current Keighley hooker George Flanagan Sr played the full 80 minutes and collected six points from the boot.

“I thought he did really well,” said Robinson.

“He has not played that much in the halves, just little bits for us.

“The conditions were not easy for him as it was wet and windy. He made his tackles and he was up against Tesi Niu and got his body in front.

“I thought he did as much as he could with the ball. I am pleased for George.”

Robinson believed the scoreline flattered the Leopards: “I thought it was a lot closer as a contest than it ended which was really disappointing from our perspective.

“We were the masters of our own downfall really. I thought we showed a lack of discipline.

“I thought our defence was good for the vast majority of the game. The problem is we ended up doing too much of it.”

Adrian Lam admitted that it was not the prettiest game to watch but was pleased to see his Leigh side make it two wins from two.

“It was tough to watch at times, but you get that sometimes in these kinds of conditions,” said Lam.

“We had the yellow warning about hurricane winds and rain, it made me nervous because it levels the game out.

“That’s why we took more two-pointers than we would normally have taken. But I am proud of the players for being able to hang on in there through a difficult first half and get to half-time in decent shape.

“The way the wind was, it was only going to be an advantage to us in the second half and it was.”
