Red Devils snap up Thunder prop

Salford Red Devils have won the race to sign Sam Luckley.

The Newcastle Thunder prop will become the club’s first signing of the Richard Marshall era after the Red Devils beat three other Super League clubs to his signature.

Luckley was introduced to his new team-mates over the weekend via Zoom.

The 24-year-old Scotland international has been a big hit in League 1, establishing a reputation as one of the best forwards outside Super League.

The dynamic forward was set to join Ottawa Aces next year, but their deferral saw him re-emerge on the market.

With a cluster of clubs currently on the lookout for middles, interest was high, but Salford ultimately secured the deal.

More movement is expected at the club before the start of the season.

The club confirmed the retention of Greg Burke last week, while Joe Burgess was unveiled as their second signing for 2021, joining fullback Morgan Escaré from Wigan.

In the backroom staff department, the club is on the lookout for an assistant coach, while former kitman Simon Gelder has returned to the club after several years.

Gelder had most recently been at Toronto Wolfpack, while he also toured with England Knights in 2018.
