Salford’s Mason Caton-Brown insists relegation is not on the minds of the Red Devils’ players as they prepare to fight it out in the Qualifiers.

The 23-year-old has been in dazzling form since his return from a long-term injury at the start of July, scoring five tries in four games, including a hat-trick against Widnes Vikings and one at home to Hull FC.

However, after missing out on the top eight, the Red Devils enter the second half of the season hoping to survive and, with the recent additions of Luke Burgess and Feleti Mateo from the NRL, they look a strong outfit.

“I don’t think we’re thinking much of relegation and we’re going into every game thinking we’re going to win it and we want to win the middle eights,” said Caton-Brown.

“We’ve not really given relegation a thought, but obviously the threat is there, but I guess that’s just what it’s like in the Qualifiers.

“Our aim was to finish in the top eight, and if we’d got the points back that we were deducted, we would have done that. A lot of people have said we are the best Salford team in ten years.”

Caton-Brown knows more than most how tough a sport Rugby League can be, returning from injury in March, before being cannonball-tackled on his return to the team and sidelined for another twelve weeks.

Nevertheless, his performances since his return to action have earned him some high praise and he now hopes this is the return to the top of his game.

“It’s been really tough on me, especially having a torn pec and then getting cannonballed straight after, it’s hard to take,” he added.

“But now it’s good just to be back on the field, and I’m just getting into the flow of things. “I’m just looking to continue my form into each game and get back to where I was. “But it’s hard when you’re injured, because you get pushed to the bottom of the pile and forgotten about when you are out for so long.”
