HULL FC chief executive Richie Myler has revealed all on his infamous spat with Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess.
Back in May 2024, the Black and Whites travelled to Warrington where they eventually went down 24-6.
However, the flashpoint that people will always remember from that Super League fixture was the heated exchange between Burgess and Myler in the tunnel before the game.
An error on the Wolves’ teamsheet meant that Burgess’ side ended up losing an interchange, but the Warrington head coach had approached Myler and Hull attempting to reverse the decision.
Now Myler has lifted the lid on what went on.
“I think it was made into more than it was. I think it was brilliant for Sky, it was the most-watched thing,” Myler said on Sky Sports’ The Bench podcast.
“I think it started with the match commissioner asking me ‘Could I let them have a sub back because of a filing error?’
“It was the first week of my job and I just said ‘I’m not sure that’s my responsibility’ to allow them to have a sub back.
“He said ‘Well, it’s not, it’s the RFL’s’ and I said ‘Well, rule on it then, don’t ask me to rule on it’.
“Apparently, he went back to Sam (Burgess) and said we were saying that they couldn’t have it (the substitute), which annoyed Sam.
“Before the game, he came to me and I said ‘Well, I don’t feel it’s my decision if you have your sub back or not’.
“After the game, I may have said something cheeky and I apologise now.”
After being pressed by The Bench hosts Jenna Brooks and Jon Wilkin, Myler revealed the “cheeky” line.
“I said something like, ‘Well, you didn’t even need his sub’ because he didn’t – they easily won so I didn’t think they needed it.
“We needed him not to have the sub!”
