Roughyeds secure Middlehurst coup

Oldham Roughyeds have confirmed the signing of talented back-row Gary Middlehurst on a one-year deal.

Middlehurst most recently played for North Wales Crusaders, however he and his wife decided to go to Australia last year.

He tweeted just over a week ago that he was back in England and the Roughyeds have promptly secured his services for the season.

He was an influential figure for the Crusaders and produced a stunning display in the club’s iPro Sport Cup final victory over Swinton at last year’s Summer Bash, with head coach Anthony Murray telling League Express that he was desperate for his star man to stay at the club.

Despite reported interest from numerous clubs, Oldham have won the race to secure his services for the year.

“Whenever we’ve played Crusaders in the past three years, Gary has been one of their top men,” said head coach Scott Naylor.
“He works hard, plays the game tough — that’s how I like it — and he never takes a backward step. That is very important in the Championship.
“We are fortunate to get him. He will be a great addition to the squad. I’m looking forward to seeing him in the Oldham jersey.”
