SALFORD RED DEVILS have reportedly been hit with formal legal action by HMRC over unpaid bills.
According to City AM, the tax authorities have filed a winding-up petition order against Salford City Reds (2013) Limited – the operating company for the Red Devils club.
A winding-up petition is a profound statement of intent by a creditor to shut down a company due to unpaid debts through compulsory liquidation.
City AM claims that this is not the first winding-up petition the club has received. The High Court system has shown 12 petitions against the club since 2016, with the majority created by the HMRC.
It is the latest instalment in a tumultuous financial period for the Red Devils, with the takeover of the club by a consortium led by Swiss businessman Dario Berta failing to provide the respite that Salford fans had hoped for.
Instead, chief executive Chris Irwin has resigned with former chief executive Paul King returning to the club in an advisory role.
King has paid the Salford players’ wages for the past three months with large sums failing to make it abroad from the new owners.
