Sam Burgess wants to keep Paul Vaughan at Warrington Wolves after heroic Challenge Cup display

WARRINGTON WOLVES coach Sam Burgess says he would love to keep hold of prop Paul Vaughan.

The 34-year-old former St George Illawarra Dragons, Canberra Raiders and Canterbury Bulldogs enforcer is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with a move away.

Vaughan led from the front and scored one of Warrington’s three tries in their 21-14 Challenge Cup semi-final win over Leigh Leopards.

“He (Vaughan) has been brilliant all year,” said Burgess. “I thought he took the game by the scruff of the neck early on.

“He made a commitment about where he wanted to go, and he dragged the team forward in the first 30 minutes. I thought he was unbelievable.

“We are doing everything we can to keep him. He is a quality bloke and he is not ready to finish yet.”

Burgess also says he wants to get some clarity from head of match officials Phil Bentham and other RFL officials on a number of rules following a contentious decision.

Warrington lost Josh Thewlis to a head knock in the second half following a head-on-head clash with Owen Trout. No penalty was given, but Burgess lost a player.

“(Josh) Thewlis failed his HIA,” added Burgess. “I’d love a bit of clarity on the rules with that.

“I mean, it’s on report, it’s head-on-head and a player has been knocked out. I don’t know if the rules have changed, I’d love some clarity from Phil Bentham and his team – who we are chasing every week.

“I heard Paul Wellens talk about it, Steve McNamara talked about it. I’m not the only coach talking about it. There is limited conversation, so it’s hard for me to lead as a coach not knowing exactly what the rules are.

“I don’t know what the rules are at the moment on head knocks. I just don’t know, it’s hard to work out.”
