Swinton Lions refreshed for two big home games

SWINTON LIONS have taken a mid-season break in their stride.

Prior to their meeting with Midlands Hurricanes on June 1, Paul Wood’s side last took to the field against North Wales Crusaders on May 4, downing the pacesetters 26-20 at Heywood Road.

A bye week was followed by the 1895 Cup semi-finals, with Swinton’s final fixture of May – a home game against Cornwall – cancelled after the south-west club’s withdrawal from the competition.

Swinton pushed Midlands hard before going down 38-26 in Birmingham, and outside back Ellis Anderson said: “It was a good break.

“It started with rest and recovery. It’s what we needed. League One is tough, especially with quite a young team.

“We’re learning as we go and building into it. The rest did us good, but in the next two weeks, we were able to properly rip in and work hard in training. We want to keep building and pushing up the ladder.”

Sixth-placed Swinton now have successive Sunday home games against Workington and Keighley and Anderson added: “If we want to be up there at the end of the year, these are the teams we need to be beating.

“We’re getting bigger and stronger as a group, and creating bonds in training. Hopefully it will show out on the field.”
