
IT will 30 years, come the end of this month, since Thornhill met Hull KR in the third round of the Challenge Cup – and the Trojans have organised a reunion to celebrate the occasion.
The event will take place on Saturday, January 25 from 7pm, at the Thornhill Sports and Community Centre, and all are welcome, including players, coaches, backroom staff and supporters.
Secretary Andrew Byram told League Express: “This was the first time a Thornhill team had ever progressed so far in the cup to face professional opposition.
“The original fixture was scheduled for Sunday, January 22, 1995. With the Thornhill players assembled at the Alma Inn, Thornhill for their pre-match breakfast the phone call came through that the field was waterlogged. The game was then moved to the Tuesday evening under floodlights.”
The Trojans’ line-up was: Richard Bainton, Steve Barwick, Johnny Moore, Daz Wraith, Dave Thornton, Andy Smith, Richard Sedgwick, Steve Naylor, Gary Moffatt, Rob Hoyle, Dave Holmes, Tony Allerton and Chris Haig. Neil Ratcliffe and Matthew Long were the substitutes.
Hull KR prevailed 58-6 before a crowd of 1,143. Smith scored the Dewsbury outfit’s try and Bainton the conversion.
