Torfaen Tigers the early leaders in Welsh Wheelchair League

TORFAEN TIGERS are the early leaders after beating SWINDON ST GEORGE 56-6 on the opening day of the campaign, edging ahead of NORTH WALES CRUSADERS, who accounted for CARDIFF BLUE DRAGONS 54-10 in the first match of Sunday’s double-header at the University of South Wales, on points difference.

New entrants Swindon had to wait until the 55th minute before scoring their only try, Oliver Matthews dotting down and Adam Davies adding the extras.

Otherwise all the action centred on the Tigers, for whom Jamie Reynolds scored five tries and a goal, converting one of his father Jason’s hat-trick efforts.

Scott Trigg-Turner contributed two tries and five goals while Torfaen’s other touchdown went to twelve-year-old Alys Golden (daughter of Wales RL communications manager Ian Golden), who was also colossal in defence.

Cardiff, like St George, were kept waiting before getting on the scoreboard, Libbie Sargent touching down early in the second period and Daniel Martin improving.

The Crusaders were, by that stage, already reflecting on a 42-0 interval lead and responded with a second try by Ffion McCabe and a third for Mason Baker, both of which nine-goal hotshot Matthew Turner improved.

Sargent hit back for the Blue Dragons between North Wales’ last two touchdowns. Turner, meanwhile, scored four tries for a personal contribution of 34 points.
