Wheelchair Celtic Cup to be held in Wales

THE 2025 Wheelchair Celtic Cup will be staged in Wales on Saturday, May 24.

The tournament, between holders Ireland, hosts Wales and Scotland, is set for Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Archers Arena, with all three sides looking ahead to the 2026 World Cup.

Wales will be determined to regain silverware they had previously secured on seven successive occasions since the launch of the annual competition in 2015.

However Scotland – and Ireland, who have two titles behind them – will have something to say about that.

Ireland head coach Phil Roberts, who was at the helm when that team lifted the trophy on their own turf last year, said: “The Celtic Cup is growing.

“All three nations are making strides in their domestic game which will raise the standard of the matches once again this year.

“Our development programme is paying dividends in terms of emerging talent and more experience for existing squad members, providing healthy competition in the team.

“We are looking forward to some tough matches and another great day of international Wheelchair Rugby League.”

Wales head coach Alan Caron said: “It’s a big day for us, the hard work starts here.

“We lost our grip on the trophy last year and we’re determined to get it back. Hopefully, our home support will cheer us on to victory.”

Scotland, who finished second last year, are seeking a first title.

With Edinburgh Giants having entered Betfred Wheelchair Super League, hopes are higher than ever before.

Martyn Gill, who is the Giants’ head coach and has now been appointed as Scotland’s boss, said: “We are working hard in all areas to shape what we want Scotland Wheelchair Rugby League to look like, and we know we have to raise our playing standards.

“We’re constantly looking to improve and I’m keen to see how this translates into our performances at the 2025 tournament.”

Schedule: 11.00am: Wales v Scotland; 1.00pm: Scotland v Ireland; 3.00pm: Wales v Ireland.

Admission prices and other information for spectators will be provided in due course.
