Wigan too strong for Red Devils

Wigan Warriors proved to be far too strong for Salford Red Devils at the DW Stadium tonight, cruising to a 45-4 victory.

Wigan dominated both territory and possession from the start.

But in the face of some determined early defence from Salford they had to wait 15 minutes to score their first try, when Matty Bowen was controversially awarded a try by video referee Ben Thaler when he touched down a Matty Smith kick barely perceptibly with his finger, with Smith adding the conversion.

Five minutes later Junior Sa’u misses Salford’s best chance of the first half when he failed to pass the ball to one of two supporting players.

Wigan contineued to press and in the closing minutes of the half added tries from Anthony Gelling and Josh Charnley.

Gelling went on to score a hat-trick in the second half, overshadowing the return of Joel Tomkins, who joined the fray in the 55th minute.

The Red Devils scored a consolation try from Josh Griffin, but Wigan added a field goal from Smith and tries fro Williams, Clubb and Smith.
