Wigan Warriors’ versatility could be key to Women’s Super League success

WIGAN star Georgia Wilson believes a willingness amongst the Warriors players to play a number of different roles in the team, could be the key to success this season.

Wilson began this season playing at fullback during the opening Challenge Cup games, but in the past has also featured at centre, on the wing and at hooker.

There are others like her who have the versatility to swap roles as and when required, which will no doubt be of huge benefit to head coach Denis Betts, should injuries take hold at any point during a league campaign which begins on Friday against York Valkyrie.

“I love playing fullback and did a full season there before the World Cup so it is a bit like going back to old ways,” said Wilson.

“I really like it there and like getting my hands on the ball but I know Denis likes me at centre as well, which is where I played in my first ever season in the game.

“I’m just more than happy to do what’s best for the team. With Isabel Rowe out, Grace Banks was covering for her in the halves leaving Denis needing another option at fullback and I was more than happy to do it.

“We have got so much depth in our squad. Someone like Grace has played in the halves, can play at fullback and could probably play on the wing if needed too. Emily Veivers, who has come from Australia this year, has played second row, in the forwards and even a bit in the halves, so we have a lot of diversity in the team.

“When Denis was recruiting, he was looking for athletes that are able to play wherever he needs them to.

“It’s good that Denis is able to change things around if he needs to and we know that those players will step up and do a job for the team. And that could be crucial if and when injuries start to hit later in the year – it can minimise some of that disruption.”
