Willie Peters hails Mikey Lewis for rising to ‘pressure’ of being Man of Steel

HULL KR boss Willie Peters hailed the “game-changing” class of Mikey Lewis after the Man of Steel bagged a hat-trick in a 50-4 rout over Huddersfield Giants.

The Robins talisman delivered a near-perfect display to cross for three tries and have a hand in four more scores as KR extended their lead at the top of Super League back to three points.

“I thought his class showed, there’s no doubt about that,” said Peters.

“There wasn’t a lot in the game at times, but the class of Mikey Lewis changed the game.

“There is a bit of pressure on Mikey this year going in as Man of Steel.

“He will always come under some scrutiny if he’s not scoring tries or coming up with assists.

“But he’s starting to hit his groove now. He’s getting some games together and there’s no doubt that in the middle part of the season, we’ll see the best of Mikey.”

Counterpart Luke Robinson was equally as effusive in his praise of Lewis and the rest of his KR team-mates.

“They’re the best side in the competition at the moment and it showed,” admitted the Giants boss. “It was a baptism of fire for George (Flanagan) and our right edge.

“We just could not tackle Mikey Lewis. I had the pleasure of coaching him with Yorkshire and I knew what a special talent he was then. He’s an unbelievable player but I thought our right edge really struggled with him.

“We know they’re a dangerous side, they’ve got a dominant pack, two unbelievable nines and they’ve got some strike on the edge, but I just thought our right edge in particular struggled handling them.”
