WORKINGTON TOWN coach Jonty Gorley may not be the biggest fan of his side having another lay-off from action, but he is able to take some positives.
Having played their first league game of the season against Midlands Hurricanes earlier this month following a three-week fallow spell due to cup breaks and the weather forcing the postponement of their scheduled match against Cornwall, they now don’t turn out again until Sunday, March 30, at home to North Wales Crusaders.
But he is hopeful that by then that he will have an almost fully fit squad to work with.
“It’s not ideal to have another spell without a game because you want to get some consistency at the start of the season,” said Gorley. “But there are always pros and cons to something like this.
“Lucas Castle only trained with us once before he played against Midlands but it often takes players a week or two to bed into things when they come from overseas.
“Will Evans could possibly have played in that game as well. We thought he’d be out for four or five weeks with his foot injury but not as bad as first feared so he’ll be up for selection for the next game.
“Similarly with Grant Reid, he turned an ankle against Dewsbury but was back running before the Midlands game so again he should be in the ring for North Wales.
“Ciaran Walker has damaged a cartilage muscle around a rib, so there’s not much we can do about that other than resting it.
“So this latest break does give all of them a chance to get themselves right for the North Wales game, as well as giving Lucas a bit more time to train with the team and bed himself into what we’re doing here.
“So while it might be frustrating that we’re not playing, we can take the positives out of it.”
