Workington Town’s ‘reluctant’ postponement of League One opener

WORKINGTON TOWN were forced to postpone their scheduled opening league game at home to Cornwall yesterday (Sunday, February 23) as rain lashed the West Cumbrian coast on Friday, leaving the Fibrus Community Stadium pitch waterlogged.

With the side from the south-west due to set off early on Saturday morning for an overnight stay, the decision was made the previous afternoon, taking the weather forecast into account.

“The RFL instructed us to make the call on Friday, and we made the very reluctant decision to postpone the game,” said Town.

A new date for the match, which involves a 930-mile round trip for Cornwall, has yet to be confirmed.
