Australia to face PNG in Commonwealth Nines Championship Final

Australia will face Papua New Guinea later this afternoon in the final of the Commonwealth Championship being held in Cumbernauld this weekend.

The Australians defeated Canada 20-0 in their semi-final, while Papua New Guinea won a very tight semi-final 12-6 against Wales.

It means that Wales will take on Canada in a game to decide third place.

Meanwhile England will face hosts Scotland in the battle for fifth place, after the English defeated Jamaica 28-8 in their elimination game, while the Scots, who have improved steadily as the tournament has unfolded, defeated South Africa 34-6 in the other game.

The finals will therefore begin with South Africa facing Jamaica for seventh place, with both countries chasing their first victory of the tournament.

A full report and photos from the tournament will feature in Monday’s edition of Rugby League Express.
