Warrington Wolves have been dealt a significant injury blow with the news that hooker Brad Dwyer is set to miss the next eight weeks of action.
Dwyer has had ankle surgery this week after picking up the knock in recent weeks, overshadowing what had been a great start to the season for the young hooker.
Smith confirmed the grim news earlier this afternoon, and says that the club refused to risk matters, and chose to have him operated on immediately.
“Brad has been operated on this afternoon, it’s a similar injury to what Matty Russell had last year,” he told the Warrington Guardian.
“We think it will be around an eight-week recovery for that one.
“We could have taken a risk with ‘rehabbing’ him for 4-6 weeks, sometimes they repair and sometimes they don’t that way. But we took all the risk out of the equation and had him operated on.
“It’s a shame for Brad but it could have been a lot worse and he’s feeling OK about it; he’s getting fixed up and he’ll be back in around eight weeks’ time.”
