Castleford Tigers explain marquee rejection

Castleford Tigers have released a statement explaining why they voted against Dr Marwan Koukash’s proposal to introduce a marquee player allowance in Super League’s salary cap rules.

Only five clubs (including Koukash’s Salford) voted in favour. Here’s why Castleford didn’t say yes to it.

“Although we are not against the idea in principle, we felt that the timing was not right to vote in favour at this stage.

“As a club, we feel that the windfall of the Sky TV monies is a great opportunity for not only Castleford Tigers but for all clubs to have some stability over the next few years which will help in their governance.

“If the economic climate changes over the next few years then our opinion may change, but our strategic planning will be to invest our resources into getting young children between the ages of six and 14 playing the fantastic game of Rugby League again at schools and at our junior clubs.

“We believe that this will develop our young player pool and strengthen the underbelly of our club.”
