Champions York Valkyrie vow to be ‘more expansive’ with new Aussie halfback

YORK VALKYRIE have added strength to their halfback options with the signing of Under 18s Origin representative Ellie Williamson.

The Australian spent last season with Canterbury Bulldogs in the NSW Premiership, and had previously been at St George Illawarra Dragons, where she made one NRLW appearance in 2023.

Williamson will provide a strong running and kicking game, and for York director of rugby Lindsay Anfield that could mean a change in how her side play.

“We’ve had to play a certain style of rugby for the past few years because of the personnel we’ve had,” said Anfield.

“We’ve had a predominantly defensive way which has been successful for us in the past few years but to entertain and really push the women’s brand of rugby, we have to be more fluent and expansive.

“To do that we have to bring in the players that we have.”

Having already won back-to-back Super League titles in 2023 and 2024, Williamson is hopeful she can bring even more success to the Valkyrie.

“Lindsay reached out to me and I wasn’t too happy in Sydney so I thought I’d change it up and move over here,” added Williamson.

“I’m expecting to make the Grand Finals and hopefully win! That would be good for the team. Hopefully we can get them there.

“I’m a team player. I play for the team and try to keep everyone together.”
