Origin: Cherry-Evans favourite to start for Maroons

Injured Queensland half-back Daly Cherry-Evans looks set to return for the Maroons in tomorrow’s State of Origin test after he was pictured running without pain in a training session earlier today.

The Manly Sea Eagles star, 25, was a serious doubt with a knee problem and it looked as though Mal Meninga would have to field third-choice Ben Hunt, with Cooper Cronk out with a broken arm.

Johnathan Thurston said playing alongside the Brisbane youngster would be “not ideal” as he didn’t know the plays as well as Cherry-Evans, but it now looks likely that the reigning Golden Boot winner will get his wish, though we will have to wait until tomorrow to know for certain as Meninga is yet to select his matchday 17.
