Cooper hoping for England recognition

St George Illawarra forward Mike Cooper admits he is hopeful of getting the nod for Steve McNamara’s Four Nations squad at the end of the season, after a strong debut year with the Dragons in the NRL.

Former Warrington man Cooper has only missed one game for the Dragons so far in 2014 after a string of impressive performances – leading to some suggesting that an England call could be in the offing. However, although Cooper admits it would be fantastic to get the nod, he has tried to put it to the back of his mind.

“I haven’t given it much thought really because I never thought I’d get the opportunity to do,” he said.

“People have been saying a few things and I’d be absolutely over the moon to get the call-up.

“I’ve got to be doing my best for St George to give myself the best chance to play for England. If we’re not making the finals, that’s going to go against my possible selection.”
