Five facts about Ryan Hinchcliffe

Huddersfield Giants’ recruitment for the 2016 season was boosted last week with the signing of Ryan Hinchcliffe from Melbourne Storm. Here are five facts about the newest Giant.

1. He’s won the World Club Challenge

Hinchcliffe has achieved a lot in his time since joining Melbourne in 2009, but nothing tops the accomplishment of winning the World Club Challenge in 2013. Storm beat the Leeds Rhinos in a mesmeric game at Headingley, eventually winning 18-14.

Hinchcliffe was also part of the Melbourne team that defeated Leeds to win the 2010 World Club Challenge, although they were stripped of that title for breaching the salary cap.

2. He was Melbourne’s player of the year

In 2010, Hinchcliffe was selected as Storm’s player of the year. It’s an impressive accomplishment regardless, but when you take into account that Greg Inglis, Billy Slater, Jonathan Thurston and Cameron Smith were in the same squad, it is quite an astonishing achievement.

3. He turned down a massive contract at Parramatta in 2o12

Hinchcliffe opted to sign a long-term contract with Melbourne instead, with head coach Craig Bellamy describing Hinchcliffe’s decision as ‘the biggest financial sacrifice I’ve heard of anyone making in their footy career.’

Huddersfield have done very well to lure Hinchcliffe away from Storm, where he had a year left on his contract.

4. He’s never played international Rugby League

It’s a testament to Australia’s depth that a man of his talents has never been called up. Hinchcliffe has played for New South Wales Country on two occasions, but has never donned the green and gold at senior level.

5. He’s the man behind this very funny video

Don’t worry, Huddersfield fans, we doubt he’ll make a habit of it.
