Not sure where you were in the crowd (I was towards the back in the library carpark) but the mayor started getting booed by a few near me, so I assumed DB was responding to get those people back on side as he seemed to do it in response.

I was on the square in front of the town hall so watching on the screen essentially and it seemed to be DB and Jukes chucking the trophy about but as I said they did stop fairly quickly

    Interesting article

    https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/rugby-league/derek-beaumont-leigh-leopards-challengecup-30705840

    What an odd, odd article.

I’d consider myself, at best, tolerant of DB but even I have to admit that he got last weekend pretty much off to a tee.

There were only two things I’d have taken exception to, and funnily enough they weren’t mentioned in the article. The first was going up with the players when they went for their medals - that very much should be the domain of the players and coaching staff only. The second was at the homecoming parade when he was pratting about with the cup on stage during the mayor making his speech, but in fairness he did stop doing that fairly quickly.

Other than that, I’d say he represented the club and RL in general remarkably well over the course of the weekend.

  3. Only ever won once with Sky VIP. Fleetwood v Bolton in the home end just in case we missed out in the away end lottery. The game never got played as it was in the abandoned Covid season.

Sky VIP do actually pay a value for their tickets for at least some of the events they offer, so it would be unfair to assume they haven’t paid for these. Plus advertising the Grand Final in itself is way up on previous years, especially as this stage.

I've been keeping an eye on how things look on the ticket site in the run up to quite a few of the games this year and the East is looking fuller than it has for all but a couple of games this year. Block B in the west still has quite a few left but that's always been the last to go this year - not sure if it's a habit thing with it previously being the away section when we were in the championship. Typically when block B has been full this year it's the kids who are coming on with flags/playing at HT which i don't think are counted on the attendances

    They are included

Always wondered why West of the Pennines, they said how many is on, when referring to crowds, but everywhere else in the country it's generally how many were in/there?

What's the meaning behind the saying?

Comes back from being “on the ground”, I think. Leigh’s old half time draw seller’s famed call was “the winner’s on the ground” (RIP Brian)

  5. Today’s advice is to make sure that your offspring do not hear about any of your gambling successes

Was having a pint at home with my mate after returning from the Wigan v Leigh game the other week and he let slip to my lad that I’d backed Leigh at 50/1 to win the Challenge Cup

End result is that my winnings now have a PS5 sized hole in them 🙈

Yes that’s one mildly offensive implacably fixed in your ways I’m right point of view . Or we could listen to different opinions of current non fans and potential new markets to see how we are perceived and use this data to increase attendances , Participation therefore increasing revenue therefore improving facilities etc , Sort of like running a business. We are in a sport that’s is just about to have its funding slashed because TV companies recognise its shrinking market , Where we have gone from being sponsored by Tetley, Gillette or British Gas to Bachelor’s mushy peas , Most clubs including yours are propped up by very kindly but not numerous ( like other sports ) wealthy benefactors. Our amateur game has shrunk alarmingly ( yes I know all sports have but we didn’t exactly start off with alot ) I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that we should openly discuss all opportunities to promote and improve the sport and showcase it in a way it deserves.

Mate it wasn’t a serious reply, hence the (admittedly edited) emoji. I’ve just had the best weekend of my life. I’ve lived my seemingly impossible lifelong dream of seeing my team win at Wembley. I had 17 tickets. These included my wife, who in the 10 years since we met has gone from having no idea about RL to being a Leigh diehard. My brother, who used to sneak in to Hilton Park with me when we were literally 7/8 years old when they used to open the gates 15 minutes from the end. My nephew who is currently being courted by Wigan and Saints for their academies but only ever dreams to play for Leigh at Wembley. My two best men; we have attended week in, week out together for 25 years and thought Spurs last year would be the pinnacle, but even said at the time “shame it’s not Wembley”.  It’s no accident how many times Wembley crops up in that.

I’ve had quite the opposite, I take everyone else point , However one of our two premier finals, our Showcases our showrooms to the world ,to have 30,000 plus empty seats I can’t see how we can think this is a good look. It’s not the fact it’s not a sell out it’s how vastly too large Wembley is for the occasion 5000 , even 15,000 empty and I don’t think we would be having this discussion but 32,000 empty seats !!!!! Come on When do you ever see a RU, NRL, NFL , Gaelic ,AFL showpiece final with so many empty seats never . I do mean showpieces by the way not ordinary games .

You need to find a few less boring mates 😉

So do you feel that Leigh v KR would have attracted less than Wigan v V Huddersfield.

Neutrals wise and having been to both games? Yes, absolutely. Wembley and the Challenge Cup are inextricably linked, and long may it continue.

And for all the fawning over the Spurs stadium, let’s not forget that they ran out of draught beer before the Challenge Cup Final even kicked off, whereas having been to Wembley twice in the last 4 months it is a tremendously well oiled machine on literally every measurable aspect.

I don’t think a baseball game or union game will affect the challenge cup final crowds much tbf. I’m pleased it’s on June 8th though, not in the school holidays and no football to clash with as the Euros won’t start until the next week.

I do think union would have a slight effect with potential local sales but maybe less so than a RU international

Why not shift it back to the 2nd weekend in May .. when it was historically always played. Pretty clear calendar then.

Hard to see how you’d fit all the rounds in then though (particularly as I feel the SL clubs already enter a round too late)

It was only Gateshead being a basket case that saved Leigh from relegation that year. You wonder how things might have turned out in that scenario. Proper 'Sliding Doors' stuff.

We lost twice to Gateshead that year, too. The home game I went to France v England at 9pm in Paris. Got back to the hotel at 3am. To the airport at 8am to fly back to Liverpool, drove straight to the LSV and we lost 42-10 🤦🏻‍♂️

If so, he's probably still stuck in the traffic jam.😱

My mate set off at 11 this morning and has only just got back. Just in time for the end of the cup parade. We got the train at half 12 and were sat at home for 3!

So based on the fact Wigan ( been there a zillion times ) played Huddersfield( not noted for their away following )there last year and got 51k , your saying that with Leigh and HKR ( first cup finals for decades hyper passionate fans , RL towns took 40k between them ) that it would have bee significantly less than 58k yesterday, That doesn’t add up , Regardless 10000 empty navy blue seats at spurs looks a S?!T load better than 35,000 empty bright Red ones at Wembley. It look’s an appalling advert on TV , either we fill the empty ones FOC with the forces , London NHS workers or some other scheme or move on .

Filling them with freebies would actually cost the RFL money as they would have to pay to open areas with zero revenue per seat.

And, yes, I have no doubt whatsoever that all of the participants yesterday would have taken smaller followings to literally anywhere other than Wembley.

My Mrs (no interest in RL or sport in general) described DB's suit and the whole leopard thing as 'vulgar' when she saw it on the TV.

As far as I'm concerned, your team can be dressed as Coco the clown and it doesn't matter if they win you the Challenge Cup at Wembley in such dramatic fashion.

I'm sure that many of the 40-50 Leigh fans who turned up at Barrow in 2009 and watched their team get beat 74-6 were there yesterday.

That win was for them and everyone who suffered the lean years.

I can’t tell you how many times that game was mentioned yesterday 😀

  13. We didn’t see any of the first half as we just needed some time to chill out in Club Wembley and absorb what we’d seen in the Challenge Cup Final. Made our way round to the Fax end as we have a few friends who support them (and had the pleasure of joining for breakfast at Baker St). Fair to say we had the perfect view of the late Batley try from the front row of the second tier!

They did have the SL-style countdown clock at least but understandably the Batley fans won’t have been able to see it as it was on the same side as the majority of their fans. Using the Our League stream on the big screen was tinpot beyond belief. It literally buffered a couple of times. Incredible stuff.

Is there a big sporting event going on every weekend in London? Or do we purposely choose to pick them to clash with?

Clashing with the opening of the PL season seemed a terrible decision! And if we're clashing with the union final next year it only invites comparisons.

There were also 74,000 at Twickenham for the rah rah’s which must have shaved off a few of the potential local sales

(I note that it was below capacity so presumably there is a clamour on Total RU to take internationals to Henley on Thames and then there aren’t any empty seats on telly)

Nah - GF to look forward to ?

It’s probably an attitude tied to the threads about moving the Challenge Cup from Wembley, but it’s always been the Challenge Cup that has been the dream. We could win the next 10 Grand Finals and it wouldn’t match that feeling. Could be wrong, but I think that’s maybe a preference for a lot of the clubs outside of the usual suspects.

  16. I dreamed all my life of seeing us win at Wembley. Today I achieved it. I’m not sure it would have been quite the same elsewhere. It wasn’t full…so what. Not a prayer it would have been such a good crowd at Spurs or god forbid Anfield, Newcastle, wherever. There’s a reason 90,000 football fans walk past rugby league statues and murals every time they go to an England game.
