Does it have a supermarket and a swimming pool though?

Gutted I didn't get there when they were in SL, Toulouse is a fabulous city. Hopefully they make it back up soon.

The ground they’ve used at Blagnac does have a swimming pool, actually! Situated at one end just as at Perpignan.

Maybe it had 3 sides for ages after it opened then? Or maybe I’m confusing away matches 🤔

It had just the two touchline stands initially with the away end opening not long afterwards (can’t remember whether it was open in time for the Regal Trophy Final). The two-tiered end wasn’t built until the ground had been open for four years.

    Great

As I say its a great facility, how do any of them benefit the fan going to watch a game of RL or make someone like the stadium over another?

Won’t be many grounds where (if it’s timed right) you can watch a game of amateur RL with a pint on the same complex as you can watch a Super League game.

Not entirely sure what else can necessarily be offered, mind, especially as York don’t have the mad outdoor water slides any more.

To be honest, an extra 900 or whatever the figure is in the North Stand would be carnage in the concourse, which needed to be built a bit deeper with at least one extra food and drink kiosk included.

Part of the conditions for the extra 888 are that the square footage of the concourse is increased by bringing up the shutters by the side of the turnstiles (bet you’ve never noticed them until you inevitably look tomorrow!) and utilising the quadrants in the corners. There has previously been a bottle bar to alleviate the queues but of course nobody can get down to it! Non attending season tickets will knock a few off the actual numbers in there though.

Ah, I thought the difference with the South Stand was higher than that. Thanks. Yes, if the capacity is 10,300 as Beaumont tweeted, then the North Stand must've been capped as well. Thought it held 4k.

Full capacity of North is 3,768 but that has only ever been used for the infamous Cas v Widnes semi final. 2,886 ordinarily.

They probably wish they'd done allocated seating in the South Stand now, though I suspect the stadium management took that decision, not the club.

To be fair, this is the first time they've ever needed a bigger boat (while charging for tickets), and there'll probably be approaching 4k away fans altogether, but still good news. Hopefully a good game that can maintain a good atmosphere, and not a procession and a league leaders shield party for the majority of the game.

Big test for Leigh will be how many memberships they can shift next year.

The difference is 218 (2,176 less 10%) so neither here nor there considering how many seats are lost for the stage (280 in East blocks A-C versus 832 if the stage wasn’t there). The numbers banded about would also suggest that the North Stand hasn’t gone to the full capacity (which has literally only happened once). Ordinarily, with everything else sold, in theory the application would be made but it is dependent on being able to expand the concourse in to the corners between the North and East/West but with so much activity in the north-west corner especially then it wouldn’t be a surprise if it wouldn’t be approved anyway.

Incredible sales all the same. Should look great on telly.

I disagree and think there should be more european teams and less English in the super league, the championship can be for England, the superleague should be European.

How many top clubs can the heartlands realistically support in terms of support and player production?

Salford could be one but are not and leigh are a one season wonder.

That leaves Saints, Wigan,  Warrington this side of the pennines, Leeds, one Hull team and Huddersfield/ Bradford the other side.

Catalan, Toulouse and 2 targeted clubs in new areas, one being Manchester, the other Wakefield District.

About 11 times the number of clubs that France can realistically support at the moment, sadly.

We’re always told how people engage with their club when their competition position is at risk. Everyone remembers that Wakey vs Cas game a few years back. But the reality is, even with clubs on the line in one single game, less people came to watch that than a mid-table match with 6th spot at stake

Of course the crowd would be less if it was 11th versus 12th. But that MPG shows that it wouldn’t be any higher even with relegation on the line.

In fairness it’s worth pointing out that the MPG was all-pay and the venue only confirmed at a week’s notice so a tougher sell compared to a season ticket game, even with the importance riding on it.

Being made to pay for visiting teams is ridiculous.

One SL club even suggested to myself recently that the Dragons should be kicked out and that France should have its own SL.

I am convinced that the only way forward  is for the NRL to step in and start NRL Europe even Phil Gould has suggested this.

P and R could stay with a vibrant chanpionship.

I genuinely think that should be the eventual end goal as it ultimately means we have too many strong teams on each side of the Channel for just one division, and I seem to recall such a plan was outlined at Catalans’ initial inclusion. We could then have more of a RU-style European Cup approach and introduce a bit more novelty to the Anglo-French games. Sadly we’re probably a good few decades away from even dreaming that.

  9. Outstanding game. The best rugby game I’ve seen since, erm, my last one (and we got a trophy at the end of that one).

A real contest throughout. Unreal defence from Leigh in the first half and ultimately that’s what counted in the end, conceding a couple of tired tries.

Tremendous atmosphere, too. I’ve seen Saints dozens of times over the years and never heard their crowd up for it quite like they were tonight.

A couple of marginal plays either way and it’s a different result on another day. Nothing to fear from Saints should our paths cross in the play offs.

It depends if Japan are still competing the world cup. The semi final matches won't be played in Toulouse but the Japanese team are using it as a base

    Fiji according to League Express?

Interesting to note the Toulouse v Fev league game will be at Stade Arnauné which is traditionally their home ground and much nearer to the city centre than both Blagnac and Stade Wallon but I thought had failed Championship grading, hence the ground move? They certainly played there in previous Championship years though as I saw Leigh play there in 2010ish.

Being a bit of a saddo, I looked at the space they have on google. There’s more than appears at a sideways glance.

I always thought there were issues behind with the houses, but there is a road in between.

There is a partial roof on the right hand side which you think could be extended fairly easily along the length of the ground.

However, if they are looking for some fairly inexpensive and heavy engineering light coverage, they could look to something like a heavy duty awning/canopy type cover which would make the area look much better than it is now and provide much needed cover.

Tbh it isn’t the lack of cover that is the problem on that side, more how shallow (and uneven) the terracing is, the large gap at the front that doesn’t really achieve anything and in particular the concrete dugouts that cause obstructed views from any number of positions.

  12. 1 hour ago, The 4 of Us said:

Yep, I get that, but still! Either way, it’s going to be a transformative development for them. Will be good to see what’s planned for the opposite side.

Hopefully there aren’t many empty seats to hide, of course! Quite what they can achieve with the West Terrace is anyone’s guess, but even just re-profiling the terracing as they have with the upper section behind the sticks would make a huge difference.

Not sure where you were in the crowd (I was towards the back in the library carpark) but the mayor started getting booed by a few near me, so I assumed DB was responding to get those people back on side as he seemed to do it in response.

I was on the square in front of the town hall so watching on the screen essentially and it seemed to be DB and Jukes chucking the trophy about but as I said they did stop fairly quickly

Time for him to take a back seat and stop making it about him.

    Interesting article

    https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/rugby-league/derek-beaumont-leigh-leopards-challengecup-30705840

    What an odd, odd article.

I’d consider myself, at best, tolerant of DB but even I have to admit that he got last weekend pretty much off to a tee.

There were only two things I’d have taken exception to, and funnily enough they weren’t mentioned in the article. The first was going up with the players when they went for their medals - that very much should be the domain of the players and coaching staff only. The second was at the homecoming parade when he was pratting about with the cup on stage during the mayor making his speech, but in fairness he did stop doing that fairly quickly.

Other than that, I’d say he represented the club and RL in general remarkably well over the course of the weekend.

  15. Only ever won once with Sky VIP. Fleetwood v Bolton in the home end just in case we missed out in the away end lottery. The game never got played as it was in the abandoned Covid season.

Sky VIP do actually pay a value for their tickets for at least some of the events they offer, so it would be unfair to assume they haven’t paid for these. Plus advertising the Grand Final in itself is way up on previous years, especially as this stage.

I've been keeping an eye on how things look on the ticket site in the run up to quite a few of the games this year and the East is looking fuller than it has for all but a couple of games this year. Block B in the west still has quite a few left but that's always been the last to go this year - not sure if it's a habit thing with it previously being the away section when we were in the championship. Typically when block B has been full this year it's the kids who are coming on with flags/playing at HT which i don't think are counted on the attendances

    They are included

Always wondered why West of the Pennines, they said how many is on, when referring to crowds, but everywhere else in the country it's generally how many were in/there?

What's the meaning behind the saying?

Comes back from being “on the ground”, I think. Leigh’s old half time draw seller’s famed call was “the winner’s on the ground” (RIP Brian)
