I don’t think anything can be more ‘Jets’ sadly than finally landing a top QB in a league where that position has never been more vital to your success.
Then to have him suffer a season ending and possibly career ending injury in the first quarter of his first game for you!
I think the Eagles and Cowboys will be very competitive in the NFC, but it’s very early days and others could emerge.
Thought the Jags-Colts match produced a very weird moment whereby everyone stopped as a strip sack/‘incomplete pass’/not playing to the whistle double fumble occurred which led to a defensive touchdown.
I really hoped it was just a strain or something.
The Jets did well to win but there was one point where Wilson literally ran back about 30 yards before finally throwing it into touch. Was enough to convince me he won't have some magical heroic leap-forward to rescue the Jets from this disaster.
I watched the Bears game first and they seem to have a similar problem at QB, with someone who is afraid to let go of the ball almost. The Packers on the other hand seemed to look OK in their post-Rodgers era.

I thought I'd start a general thread to complement the tipping threads. I'd love to do that but unfortunately I'm terrible at keeping things up!
The first week was really good and the stand out performance was probably the Cowboys vs the Giants.
As a Jets fan, this morning was certainly a bittersweet victory. Rodgers is out for the season and possibly forever after just 4 snaps. Not only is it gutting, but it's pretty embarrassing too after the off-season hype.
Beating the Bill's can never be scoffed at, but I didn't see anything to suggest that Wilson has made leaps and bounds over the off-season.

Has Southgate outstayed his welcome? On social media fans mood is turning against him. A poor display against Ukraine, keeps Henderson on pitch for 90m and leaves Eze on bench. Persists with Maguire, only good performance was Maddison. We'll qualify alright, but another group of talented players could be wasted if Gareth the darling of the FA stays.
Southgate has never been a darling of fans on social media.
However, people have very very short memories.
The idea that another group would be wasted is ludicrous. His results far outdo any manager aside from and maybe including Ramsey.

Think the Detroit Lions made fools of us all but it was a clutch performance by Jared Goff at QB.
Really looking forward to the return of Redzone on Sky.
Best live action highlights programme there is particularly dramatic towards the end of the 6pm kick offs and 9pm kick offs.
Yeh me too, perfect for a Sunday evening.
Actually a bit disappointed that the Jets are the Monday night game because it's making me wait that bit longer.
I'm fortunate enough to be going am NFL game in Chicago this year so I'm gonna take a particular interest in them this year.

Latest rant about Box Office.
Smith vs Eubank 2? Really, that's the level of fight that is now a PPV? God knows who actually pays for this garb.

I do not tend to like fantasy films but in my defence I have enjoyed a lot of fantasy novels in the past and it was my knowledge and appreciation of fantasy stories in general that I was applying to my critique of the Harry Potter film here because I was attacking elements of the storytelling and fictional universe. The source material may well be good but if it is I feel that it certainly hasn't been translated onto film well here.
To give another, of many, examples of laziness in the storytelling on top of those I pointed out with the use of the Christian calendar, there is an instance where a student's broomstick goes haywire and he ends up hanging from a flagpole before falling to the ground and breaking his wrist. In the film we see there are levitation spells so why didn't the teacher, who was just looking on in shock, just use this spell to stop the student falling? And when he does fall, he is sent off to see a nurse and stay in a hospital; once again, given the endless things that can be achieved with magic in the film, surely there is a spell that can repair broken bones? These tiny little bits of logic that are missing from the fictional universe are what really bugged me about it. It is lazy world building and for a film that revolves around a fictional universe, these little details should have been thought of.
If you're a social pariah then I am as well mate, because I hate superhero films as well and remember a time when they were thought of as a bit of a joke so I find it crazy how they are so dominating these days.
I might be going too far, but I totally feel the same about Star Wars and most action films..
If you ask questions of pretty much any of these films they don't make even a modicum of sense.
My personal preference is for films that are at least based in reality. I feel much the same away about wizards as I do about ridiculous chase scenes with 100 people shooting at one guy who miraculously survives even though he's fallen down a cliff etc.

Was it that obvious??
Do you generally like films like that though?
I feel like a borderline social pariah because I can't stand Superhero films and films about wizards and elves in general. I just seriously don't get it.
In general, I find CGI has made them even worse. Any films like that I'm unfortunate enough to be subjected to, just look terrible.

I've recently got a Garmin watch and I'm really impressed. I've signed up for Runna and it puts it all through the watch.

Turns out I was totally wrong: average Parkrun times have been getting slower year on year. The first year's average was 22 minutes!
I've had a bit of a mare this summer with Parkrun. I originally planned on doing Amsterdam and Derry.
We got up, rented bikes and set off to Amsterdam only to get absolutely drenched while we were trying to find a certain bike route. We went back with our tails between our legs.
Derry was also weather affected and was forecast storms with a lot of wind. We decided against it because of the previous week's experience, but I think it ended up being OK.
We were supposed to be doing Widnes tomorrow and now the missus isn't feeling well

There are plenty of those yes.
But also plenty just saying thank you Spain for winning. And these comments are raised up the rankings by loads of people liking them.
And also a fair few complaining that Spain didn't get to take the penalty again because the English keeper was off the line.
I expect a mixed bag of comments but I cannot find one, not one, in the first 10 pages saying anything about England doing well in the Wolrd Cup.
The vast majority of people commenting on that page (5,837 at current count) are cleary happy that the England team lost. Whatever their reasons, I find that a sad state of affairs.
Personally, I wouldn't go onto any forum like that to gauge the public's mood. It's a bit like coming on here after England RU have lost the final and expecting it to be impartial.
People seek it out to make a point. They do it for political reasons, but there are also a lot of Celts and foreign contributors too.
Something I do find odd is the need to apportion blame. The reality is that every player tried their utmost, it was a WC final ffs but you'll find many comments about lacking heart or desire etc. Even worse is the use of player ratings. Lucy Bronze has been exceptional for years but gets given a 4 for losing the ball in a crucial area. Way to kick someone when they're down.

I made a big effort to see it, but the quality of both teams was poor, and neither side would even beat a premier Northern league side if we're honest
Why would anyone expect them to? Before we get into the genetics of women compared to men, women's football is still in the early stages of its development.
It was a close, tightly fought game that could've gone either way. Standard doesn't necessarily equate with entertainment (not to say it was a great game btw).

This world cup has raised lots of discussions about investment in girl/women’s soccer in Australia.
I’m in my 50s and have always lived near lots of playing fields. I have never in my life seen adult women play soccer in real life. Not once. I’ve seen w-league highlights on TV but that’s all.
I’ve seen heaps of adult women play touch football, Oz-tag, netball, rugby league, field hockey and even ultimate frisbee. I also work with women who play rugby union and AFL. I’ve never worked with a woman who has said she plays soccer.
These are merely my observations though.
I do, however, hope any investment into infrastructure for women’s sports reflects what they actually play.
From the other end of the spectrum, my opinion is that we're at the beginning of an explosion not just in profile but in standards of women's football.
One of the British women commentators said something about this result inspiring young girls and boys not being able to tell them that girls don't play football etc.
In my experience, this has already happened. In the decade and a half or so that I've been in education, the number of girls that play for clubs has increased massively. About 10 years ago, I trained a Y6 girls football team and took them to a tournament, and they were a bunch of novices who'd never kicked a ball. There was one girl at the tournament who was like a Y6 boy and ran rings around them.
Last year, I had 4 girls in one Y6 class who played for clubs outside of school, two of which were as good as any of the lads.
I suspect most pro-players, especially those over 25 or so, had to go out of their way to play and put up with comments etc. The next generation will have had this far less.

Just been on the Have Your Say comments on the BBC website.
Almost universally celebrating England's loss.
Not for the reasons you might think though.
The highest rated comments are actually critical of things that the mens team often get criticised for: arrogance in the media and hype presuming we would win etc. There's also been a fair amount of criticism of the commentary team disrespecting the Spanish.

Pretty sure that's the Latin translation of the phrase that goes under the England seal.

Better team won but extremely frustrating, as tight football games so often are when you're losing. England gave possession away too easily.
Why oh why will they not bring in stop the clock?

The Matilda’s have done very well. Hopefully they can maintain this level for many years, however, if the rest of the women’s soccer world develops they may eventually struggle like the Socceroos have struggled.
It's not gonna make you feel any better the day after, but there's a good chance that it won't ever get any better for you than it has the last couple of weeks.
Not only was it a home tournament with all the benefits that that brings, but as you say other teams are only going to get better as they take it more seriously. Then you add in a couple of the big teams underachieving and Australia's chances look limited in the future. I actually expected them to be better, but Kerr aside they were really quite basic.
England in 1966 experienced something not too dissimilar. The difference is we won it, which has led to unrealistic expectations ever since.

To be fair, England are *really* good at this. It's one of the reasons we win. The Euros final was an absolute masterclass in dark arts.
But ... having given a very early (and deserved) yellow, the ref chickened out of plenty for both sides. That suited England more but Australia were not angels.
We definitely targeted Kerr and tried to rough her up a bit, but it was hardly out of the norm for a game of football.
It's been great to see how big it has been in Australia, but it struck me a bit today how much they were novices. They seemed to be cheering at odd points and booing things that were pretty standard.

Well that was a highly satisfying victory. Totally deserved victory and easily their best performance of the tournament.

Soccer (and I think RU) has a tone/contrast requirement as well as colours. It could be that.
Or it could be that Nike want to sell kits.
Apparently it's something to do with colour-blindness. I still think it's sad that we're not seeing the yellow vs white.
Anyway, that said, great first half from England. Great goal that we've deserved, been the more controlled game all half.

Come on Lionesses!
One question, and I know I'm too stupid to understand, why are England in blue? White vs Yellow is so iconic.

Whilst teams might have won it from 0-2, apparently only 13% of teams make the playoffs from that point.
Not a great stat for the Vikings.
It goes down to 3% for 0-3.
