  1. Say the team that finish 4th manage to beat Wigan in week one.

And say Warrington somehow beat Saints in week one also.

And say Wigan and Saints then go on to beat whoever in week two to progress to week three.

Warrington would have to choose either Wigan or Saints. Who would you pick? Wigan being the best team in the league (but you have a good record against them), and Saints being your ultimate bogey team (although you would have finally just beaten them two weeks prior).

There'd be a 3rd option in there, and we'd pick them.

Or have I got it wrong?

  2. with the current playoffs involving 8 teams, just wondering who plays who dependant on finishing positions. basically whats the order of play and on what dates. cant find it anywhere.

This link shows how they worked last year, and I think it's the same this.

Not sure if that "Club-call" thing is going to be applied or not.

Top 5 was far easier and better IMO anyway.

  3. Will the wire support outnumber the Quinns fans as usual?

Two trips darn sarf in 6 days.

Will this be the very last game played at the Stoop?

Even without the big names that are being rested, Wire by 20.

I'll say, even without Wembley, the switch to Friday ruled me out, but after what I spent last weekend, there's an absolute no chance, Id need a lift to/from, free food/drink/freeticket.

The game is fairly irrelevant compared with finding out about next season.

That will be more interesting than the score, I'll admit.

Think we will sneak through in a high-scoring game, don't see us getting enough to get second. Not a big loss really, it's not like we gain much of a home advantage against St Helens.

I think we'd have a better chance at home, but Saints will take to the pitch the day after tomorrow knowing what they have to score to slam that door of hope shut bigstyle.

Still, we're in the play-offs after Wembley, and we get 2 goes at it, best we ever achieved so far, so it's all positive, even IF OT stay 1 step away this time.

  4. Unfortunately I'm not very familiar with London at all. We put Stanmore in the sat nav, intending to park at Stanmore underground - where I parked the last time I went to Wembley (1983  )

We ran into the jam and subsequently discovered that the car park was full anyway, turned around, turned right at the first roundabout and parked on the street down there. Judging from the people hanging about it's obviously a Jewish area.

It took us about 15 mins to walk back to the underground.

Another annoying factor was that we needn't have bought return tickets. You didn't need a ticket on the return journey.

Well, if you'd headed to Aylesbury, and got a train from there....... ;)

  5. Correct, every ticket the RFL had available was sold.

Incidentally, the last England football game there had over 10k fewer spectators, and that had a lot of offers trying to get folks in after the World Cup performances, so less than 5k below capacity on the day is a major achievement, not a reason to moan.

As an add on I read today that the football World Cup final had 85000 in attendance.

    Our game had 217 more.

So much for it being a minority northern sport, eh? B)

  6. I think it might have looked worse where I was sat looking down onto events. Certainly from reports from the likes of yourself and the punt who seemed to be nearer suggest so. I just saw three phases of it all, the initial flying fists between some fans, to the fighting with stewards when they intervened ending up with the far more visual aspect of large areas of seats emptying as fans moved away from the area and the stewards got on top of the situation.

Sadly one other thing I witnessed which I never thought I would at a game of Rugby League were two supporters being moved by stewards to other seating areas - both of whom were carrying visibly upset small children. It's the likes of these spectators that Rugby League can't afford to alienate.

I was sitting behind the punt, I got in with his spare tickets, tbh.

I might have missed some of the start due to watching a rugby match, which was what I paid to do.

It looked worse because of folks moving away, pushing folks to keep them away.

Yes, there were a few phases, but not involving a great many actual participants.

Didn't see the sad sight you also reported, and scolly, no, didn't see that either, due to watching the match.

  7. I'm not sure why or how but I didn't see any of this fighting at all so not sure it could have been that big an episode

It wasn't really, half a dozen max involved in a scuffle if anything, then there were folks standing keeping clear, or making way for stewards.

Hardly a riot, or major outbreak of violence, just a drink fuelled minor scuffle, actually dealt with in a minute or 2, though it took a bit longer for those near to re-take seats etc.

Pity it happened, maybe keeping drink away from pitchside would work, though that could lead to tensions in a drunken crowded bar at half time etc.

  8. poor game

leeds were useless and wire were just better than average

shame for such a large crowd in a great stadium to get such a poor quality game of RL.

I take it you didn't watch.

24 tackles early doors in the Wire 20, we shut them out, that won it, defence.

Then we had to break them down, step forward Lee Briers, behind a pack gaining dominance.

Leeds also had spells in the second half, but by then the try they did score was consolation.

We'd have preferred nil, but that's a big ask.

Mclennan claims his side didn't freeze, Wires just out defended and dominated much of the game.(I think that was the Express where I read that) Other than Sinfield going walkabout, Leeds did what we let them, but it was no-where like the blow-outs at Huddersfield or in the semi v Catalans, where "game over" signs were up before half time.

If Peacock had played, then the forward battle might have been a bit tastier, but it was still a a good game, which if not really in doubt, had an element of it when Smith scored.

I'm sorry we didn't choke, which you love us doing, took great delight in it.

We're winners now, get used to it.... ;)

  9. I'd just like to stress the point that I was at the GF when there was trouble and it was Saints fans fighting Saints fans. I've been to many games over the years regular and finals and I'm not sayig Saint fans don't cause fights, but from my experience of what I've seen with my own eyes Saints fans tend to annoy each other much more than the opposition.

A good few years back, I went to a Wires/Skints game at Wilderspool with a couple of workmates, they were from St. Helens.

I was a bit apprehensive, I'd be wearing my Dessie top, and in with the opposing fans.

There was a scuffle, stewards flying in etc, and it was Skint v Skint arguing over Aussie players in the team....

    Me?

    Stood there laughing at them.

  10. I've disliked Wire ever since Murphy screwed us in 1974. TBH I was delighted when they lost to Widnes the folllowing year. I loved it when Lydon dropped the long distance goal at Maine Road too. There's no doubt they were the best side yesterday, but I thought the Giants were robbed last season.

Damn that Jack, his beans, at that feckin big plant he grew....

BTW, 74, Murphy did pull a trick or 2, I've watched a tape since I grew up (honest, I have...) and we certainly played the ref as well as Fev.

1 try a side v Widnes, discipline cost us, and THAT dg was a real gut kicker.

But been discussed loads of times before, however, if you want a definition of "gamebreaking moment", that's the clincher.

  11. Enjoy the glory while it lasts Wendall, it wont last forever, these things tend to go in cycles, so make the most of your moment in the sun but try not to gloat too much!!

Most of us Wires fans are loving our spotlight time, but the timescale from being "it's nice they won something at last" to being resented has been cut very short, and for only 1 reason, which I fully understand.

The "ignore" button was invented for him.

Or for us other folks, anyway.

  12. Okay got a picture of the events from above, will post on here for you to see in the next week or so.

Look Wezza, you're close enough to get decent action shots, but can't put them up now, which just has us all thinking "photoshop time" to make them fit.

1 picture, no matter where taken from means nowt, could be first blow, or retaliation.

Or goading/response, you know what I mean.

I had my camera at the game, but didn't take photos of the scuffle, not into happy slapping, so watched the pitch in the main.

  13. Yes but back then Sky wanted to make rugby league into a national / European sport and had good reason to be optimistic about London RL and PSG. Nowadays even Quins fans accept that their team are always likely to struggle.

So did Richard Branson, when Virgin sponsored Broncos and led them out at Wembley, where's he now?

It really is, so what happens now? time.

As a Wires fan, I'm really worried this is it for top flight London rugby.

Had some great days out there when opportunity arose, and other than 75 and 90 in cup finals, never been to London to watch a defeat.

  14. Well, Lee Briers couldn't go on the pi$$ for ages, as he was pulled out for a drug test.

Tony Smith had a right rant about that, it's on Sporting life and BBC rl sites.

De-hydrated players asked to urinate on demand, maybe he has a point.

    However, I digress.

    Wires to Old Trafford.

    Game 1 v Skints.

Anyone else see a problem here?

Home or way, it's most likely a defeat, even if we rest a few on Friday v Quins.

So, we go "sudden death" and assuming we clear the next hungry side from below, really we need Wigan to have lost their first game to give us a better chance there.

    Knowsley Road away twice?

Sorry, I don't believe we can do that (yet)

Skints at home twice, maybe we could sneak 1 game at last, but in this "run" of cup glory, there's 1 big noticeable team we haven't played, and the heavy monkey is still there.

Maybe it is our year, but I think really 2011 is a better option.

Be nice to be wrong, mind.... ;)

  15. Sky pay what they feel the game needs. I doubt they care if there is a team in London or not.

Well someone did in the beginning, and a team in Paris.

It really is up to the powers that be, who-ever REALLY pulls the strings what happens next.

Makes no odds what we say here, "they" won't read this and say "goldcard's right, we should change names and move to Luton as London Hatters" or anything.

And from what I read into the BBC report, it IS a question of how deep the RFL's pockets are now.

I really should stop trying to type so quickly, I'm a van driver ffs..../edit.

  16. Just fyi re club wembley - My brother in law won 2 club Wembley tickets...he sent them to me as he knows I go to CC final every year,(I noticed they were non transferable..um) I passed them to my non RL sister, but proud Warringtonian and she and her eldest daughter got caught up in the pre final excitement and used them. She said very cosy chairs, plenty of spaces, a drunk Rhino, an Aussie who said which team is which and changed to supporting Rhinos in 2nd half "because they need my help more" and a few who were presumably CW members. I thought with an ebay price for similar ticket of
  17. I'll admit to being a non Mathers fan, but he was very good yesterday, and Brett seems to be on the later stages of his career, and is also being more closely watched by defences now, kind of "Jamie Bloem" all over again, sensation at first, then everyone watched for him.

I'm a bit unsure, but suspect moving Ritchie on could be a mistake come the business end next year, though when the announcements were made thought it could be ok...

Yeah, you heard it here first folks, I'm pretty much on the fence. B)

  18. Playing and watching sport is two different things surely?

I've watched RL avidly all my life but hardly played it compared to soccer. Lads in our junior soccer club on the whole don't watch Leeds United and it's just down the road?

Take your point on the development officers though, how much they get the kids playing against Quins is something to consider.....

As a teen, I watched when I could, and really wanted to pull the primrose and blue on.

As I played, it was obvious I wasn't that good, but I then wondered, before my knee went, if maybe second tier second team could be my level, but I didn't get to go ask for a trial anyway on a whim, my doc said retire (at 19!!!, didn't last but I'd lost too much fitnes/edge by the time I played again)

I guess being from Warrington, or Wazza for the Sport readers on here, it's more ingrained, if you love the game it's want you want to do.

London is a whole bigger ball-park, and with real access to venue issues.

  19. There were more than enough empty seats in the Leeds end with 20 mins to go. The wire end seemed to stay quite full though!

Their version of the Wigan Walk, the Leeds Leg-it.

    Also called the Rhinos' Run-off.

I've also witnessed the Bradford ######-off, and (many) years ago the Saints Stroll.

It's a mile off topic, but I felt for the Leeds players, going to salute their fans at the end, to find they were already on the M1....
