because they even have less goof players and because the Welsh TV contract is more realistic and much more bigger than the French one?

No, because their players are spread amongst SL clubs rather than concentrated in one. Might encourage a few to switch allegiance from England.

Having one mid-season international is not going to get a French TV contract, especially if they don't bother fielding their best players.

Get what you are saying but surely it says enough about our sport when they don't have power.

It says a tremendous amount about our sport. What we shouldn't be doing is highlighting it to the world by organising internationals during periods that will guarantee weak selection and thus damage the reputation of the international game.

    Why would Carney represent Lancashire.

Brian Carney played for two SL clubs before Wigan and neither was in Lancashire.

Not quite sure why or how it was allowed, but I'm just demonstrating that it didn't rule out non-Yorkshire/Lancashire players.

Only thing I can think of is that, with Gateshead being his first club, he had choice of either and opted for Lancashire because his current side at the time was Wigan.

The Roses game would be missing any England players from the NRL as well as any potential players who happen to be born in Cumbria or outside Lancs and Yorks (and it would be even more of a nonsense if those potential internationals played their own lesser game as some kind of salve for the conscience of those advocating simply a resurrection of the failed Roses games from the past.)

"Internationals" may be a useless suggestion but when the alternative is, "we'll do what failed for a century but this time we'll market it better, somehow ..." ...

Missing NRL players? - Yes. As would any mid-season rep fixture (unless it's against a southern hemisphere side, which it won't be). It's a purely SL fixture.

Missing players from the rest of the country? - Every English SL club currently (and the vast majority fit the last decade) is from an area that would qualify. Chances are, a Cumbrian SL player would qualify through the club they played for first (like in NRL for SOO). Brian Carney represented Lancashire.

Surely this is when the IRL step in.

    How? With what power?

In a situation where we could force teams to play their best players in particular international windows set up credible international tournaments, I'd be massively in favour of internationals and wouldn't even suggest Roses.

But we can't. We have to be strategic with the situation we're in. Setting up fixtures for ideal situations that don't materialise isn't strategic.

Exactly. Internationals can be sold as events to people outside the bubble we live in.

The issue I have is we can hype up these mid-season internationals, new fans get intrigued, then they see what's actually being presented (a mis-match in front of a small crowd in a smallish ground) and think it's a very poor product. If it's not going to be done right, do something else.

    Suggestion is Internationals.

    Against who?

France don't release players. England don't have their NRL players. The southern teams won't travel mid-season. Playing a mid-season international under those circumstances does more to harm the international game than develop it.

Unless that changes, the rep fixture shouldn't be an international. It does nothing for anyone.

It's not embarrassment, it's progression. As you're another long time poster you know I'm not the argumentative type. However we have just had a reduced SKY deal yet we are discussing a thread about a regionalised match or series? Says enough tbh.

Does the Sky deal include a mid season rep game?

Really can't believe this is a discussed subject in modern day RL. Yes at professional level we a predominantly a Northern sport but nit necessarily a M62 sport.

The asteria denotes teams deemed as M62 clubs, despite clubs like Keighley being dome distance away. 14 out of 36 are not from the M62 region. Over a third. We need to open our eyes znd ghink positive. Anyone who thinks that a War of the Roses would be positive at top level RL needs their head shaking. Thoughts like is why we can never get ourselves out of the stereotypes we have pigeonholed ourselves into.

What's the combined attendance of those 8 English clubs not in the Yorkshire/Lancashire region?

There's nothing to stop Wales playing France at the same time. Not Cumbria. I also noticed you bizarrely excluded Doncaster and Sheffield from Yorkshire!

I don't understand the embarrassment some have of being associated with our northern heritage. This can act as a celebration of that as well as a meaningful rep selection process. The previous incarnation of it held midweek cannot really act as a precedent for success. It wasn't given a fair chance in the modern age.

    Quoting myself.

If one were making up a silly tournament would Yorkshire v Lancashire v Cumbria v Mighty Love Gods (everyone not covered by the first three) work in any way?

Each plays three matches leading to a final?

If you're going to go that, it might as well be the Exiles (at least it guarantees 2 home games). But you're then committing 4 weeks to it which I think is way too much.

Cumbria should certainly be playing at the same time, as should other regions, but not against Yorks or Lancs.

6,000 more people turned up to the first Exiles (2011) match compared with the number who went to the last Roses match.

(Not saying you're wrong by the way, just that it's not quite as straightforward as may appear).

You're comparing a game on a Wednesday night between SL fixtures to a game on a weekend with a build and at least some novelty surrounding a new event. 2 years later, it attracted less than 8k on a Friday, hence why it was binned.

I'd actually start the English season with an England v All Stars game, promoting the new SL season. I'd then move into a mid-year 4 Nations played over a 3-week period (with a SL break). The final could then be played a bit later in the season, or maybe post-season, as a warm up for the southern hemisphere opponent.

England v All Stars is just the Exiles game, except at the start of the season and it being freezing. It wouldn't be any different.

You'd never get a mid-year 4N. If you're expecting NH teams to compete, you're wasting 3 weeks on sub-10k crowds instead of a round of SL. Not really worth it. You'd never get SH teams to travel mid-season for 3 weeks (can't even get 1 week).

Make War of Roses a storyline for getting a place in the test matches against the SH end-of-season-----try something, a 4 team convention with 4 out of the 5(Lancashire-Yorkshire-Rest of England- France-Rest of Exiles) by combining two of the "not Yorkshire" teams

It's a hard "no" to made up teams. They don't sell. It's not an event.

The single best post on this thread and nobody (as far I can tell) has replied to it. The fundamental reason why it wouldn’t work; as it hasn’t done so in the past.

When you have a league with a high number of imports, most rep games won't have as high as intensity as the top 2 playing. The only ones with better quality would be those involving players from a league with more quality players (ie the NRL), and that ain't happening mid-season.

So basically, bin off mid-season rep rugby.

  15. Since Hull got out of their slump, they've only lost one game at home in the league, and that was against top of the league. They have beaten Hudds, Wigan, Saints, Cas and Wakey. They're remaining games are Wire (in a slump and we've already beaten them), Leeds (inconsistent and we've already beaten them away) and Huddersfield (hit and miss, but have already beaten at home), Cas away (beaten them 3/3 times) and Saints (beaten them convincingly at home but away is different). 4 out of 5 wins is doable.

2 of KR, Salford and Wire need 3 wins from 5, or 1 of them + Leeds 4 from 5 to stop Hull if they there those 4 wins.

Can only see 2 max for Wire. 3 at most for Leeds.

Think Salford and Rovers have a chance.

Because their main priority was to get off the pitch uninjured at the end? Same reason half the Lancashire team would pick up a knock the Sunday before the game that would clear up in time for the following round of fixtures. It's a nothing fixture for the 'lancashire' players.

Unfortunately didn't work out that way for Steve Prescott. Was his last ever gave of rugby league.

The Lancashire players seemed to care the previous 3 meetings 🤷

I think playing it midweek either side of SL games was a big reason for the quality and the drop outs. Standalone weekend would be far better.
