  1. what about THE WARRIORS? the most amazing b movie of all time. or,just for the title alone,HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN!

The Warriors is a superb film, especially as the cast were almost all completely inexperienced. It has a 'B Movie' feel to it, without the usual lack of quality.

It also marked a career high point for Michael Beck, who played Swan. After owning the screen in this, he took supporting parts in some real stinkers.

For fun, you can watch The Warriors while tracking where it all happened (and what it looks like now), thanks to this exceptionally thorough bit of location scouting.

  2. Ooh! I just found a pilot for a Sixties TV sci-fi show on YouTube called The Solarnauts. It never made it as far as a series, but it has a goofy charm and style that tries to channel the Buck Rogers/Commando Cody sort of shows from the Fifties.

All very ho-hum, you might think. But one of our intrepid space heroes is played by... Derek Fowlds! Yup, Bernard from Yes Minister plays all-action space ace 'Tempo'!

I don't know if the above link will work. It's ages since I tried this.

The album is John Cale's "Paris 1919". It's probably featured here before, if so, sorry.

I first came across it when my brother went on his travels and left his albums at home in the early 70s. This was one of his albums and I just fell in love with it. How on Earth does a hell-raiser with the Velvet Underground suddenly produce such a melodic, peaceful, beautiful album? This track is my favourite - "Andalucia". Enjoy.

edit: Link seems to work. Now, how do I post the album cover pic?

I do love the first track from that album especially. Your post has provoked me to finally order the CD, despite first hearing it at least 10 years ago.

  4. Just watching the latest 'Wheel of the Worst' (Episode 11) from Red Letter Media. Three all-time lows in video 'entertainment', laughed at, squirmed at and dissected. Language NSFW.

Video #1: How to seduce Women through Hypnosis. This is even creepier than it sounds. A feeble disclaimer to discourage potential rapists is totally unconvincing.

Video #2: How to get Revenge (presented by Linda 'The Exorcist' Blair). A set of frankly dangerous and vile suggestions, and so legally questionable I can't believe it was ever released. The disclaimer on this is (possibly) even worse.

Video #3: UPC Codes and 666 (Beware the Mark of the Beast). How barcodes are the mark of Satan. Even more foil-hatted, paranoid theorising than an average TRL thread about Nigel Wood.

  5. I had lunch here today. Imaginative and tasty recipes (check the menus), and decent sized servings too. We intended to eat at the excellent Caravan (next door), but we would have had to wait for a table.

Nice to see the chef, Bruno Loubet, working in the open kitchen, too. I understand that the way a modern restaurant works doesn't require the star to be constantly present, but there he was, making tortellini. Gave us a nod and a smile as we left, too - he looked like a contented man.

  6. Agreed. I was never a fan of Cunk's "Moments of Wonder" on Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe and was baffled as to why people loved that bit. After last night, I'll gladly admit I was wrong. Howling with laughter.

I think that, instead of just being one part of the show, the writers could concentrate on honing Philomena's unshakeable imbecility to a fine edge.

I downloaded it and watched it again, only to realise that I'd missed quite a few zingers the first time around.
