And a full-time score of 78-6.
That actually better than I’d expected. Well done France for going there.

Huddersfield away and Oldham away quite nice! And Leigh’s trainers … why not, very unique!

Wigan have a 25k seater stadium and have earnt the right to play at home if that is their preference. And if they can sell 25k FULL PRICE tickets then fair play
If the WCC has a genuine growth strategy for the future fair enough, but in its current guise I think play at DW and sell it out.

There is absolutely the chance that rugby union will claim the sport as its own if we are not careful. I hope we have all the relevant protection in place globally.

That’s a beauty, once again jealous of Hull having castore
That’s a really nice shirt! I bet that will sell well. Castore could be a good addition to RL
Warrington is unusually average though, normally theirs are good. And a lack of rugby balls in their promo video!

Our best chance could be to persuade the NRL that Samoa need to tour rather than Samoa themselves, they could just tell them to come and they’d be here!
-
Make the Pacific Champ a qualifier to tour England and send NZ here in 2024.
Two benefits, we get guaranteed games and Aus would lose a final every year just to avoid touring

Two shockers from Saints. However lucrative the deal is, Home Bargins just looks awful and screams tinpot. Not a good luck from one of our premier clubs.
I don’t see what is wrong with the sponsor, they are a huge business who are paying money to go on the front of their shirt. No different to other clubs (except the fact they are actually a big business!)

There is / was a CLEAR PATHWAY and if any of the minnows are/ were good enough they had the chance to step up to the next level.
Up until 2018 there was a European A ,B and C which included Wales, Ireland, Scotland and France, and initially Russia in the top tier.
As I pointed out once before it started in 2005 when Netherlands Serbia and the short lived Georgia came onto the scene. Georgia won the qualifying group to advance to play with the big boys in two groups of three with the two winners playing off in the final.
France beat Wales.
2009 Italy and Lebanon came in as France seemed to not enter only to come back a year later (2010) when European A was France Ireland Scotland and Wales.
2012 was a strange one with only Ireland and Scotland in European A ...maybe Wales and France dropped out to prepare for the 2013 World Cup ?
2014,2015 and 2018 had the four usual suspects.
While all this was going on European B (2007 till present day) and European C (from 2008) and eventually European D (2021) were developing .
I know covid had an affect but it just seems like the Welsh, Irish, French and Scots (or the RLEF ) have made little effort since 2018 to get European A back up and running. Again this may have had something to do with the now cancelled world cup and the proposed qualification process... I dont know.
For people to now suggest for a "tiered structure" its been in place since 2005 but has become a bit hit and miss at European A.
Check out the link on the RLEF website for full details.
https://europeanrugbyleague.com/competitions/98
Fully aware of all those comps which were great but as we stand here today there is no consistent structured tiered competition, regardless of what’s gone before. So I think fine to propose it as a route forward.

I appreciate the sentiment but people overrate Serbia. They were recently hammered at home by a French A team and then lost to the Netherlands. They would be in group C or even Group D if we want to give them competitive matches IMO.
Doesn’t have to be Serbia, but the point stands on tiered competition with top side playing England. At least then there is a clear pathway.

Actually, it is.
"The objects of the Rugby Football League as set out in Constitution are:
(a) to foster, govern, develop, organise and manage the Game, in respect of all age groups, at all levels and for both sexes, in Great Britain and Ireland"
Fair enough, I take that point back then I thought I recalled something from years ago where this was stated not to be the case - but I stand corrected.
Altho that would mean it’s also their job to develop it in England and they don’t do that either When we had the great days of sport England funding for development officers we really saw the benefit in my view and are still seeing that today with, for example, the Londoners in SL who are now just coming to the end of their careers.

I put this on another thread, but I’d have a Euro Champ B every year (Wales, France, Serbia +1 other) with the winner then facing England in the mid season test for the Euro Champ. This ensures England play the best of the rest each year but also ensures other nations play competitively with also a route to a Tier 1 nation to test themselves. Also gives credibility I think to each of those levels (Euro Champ C etc. can call in behind and promo/relegation between the levels)
With regards the RFL … let’s remember they are not the governing body in Scotland, Ireland or Wales. So it’s not their job to develop those nations. However, clearly they could help. The most obvious is Wales. For a relatively low level of funding a league 1 club in North and South Wales could be maintained which then provides a pathway for a nation which has continued to show willing and produce players.
Personally I think Wales and France are two nations the IRL should be targeting as both have the potential to produce good domestic based national teams.

I think France vs Wales mid season would be a good competitive annual fixture. But leaves the issue of who do England play.
Personally I’d have a Euro Champ B competition at the end of each season for countries excluding England. Then the winner plays England the following mid season for the Euro Champ. It would at least give Euro countries a competitive comp and regular games and then ensures they test themselves against the best each summer - then gives England a game together before end of season vs SH team.

I think Penrith will be keen for this not only after last year but they have never won it (I remember watching the Bulls beat them!) - they must feel like they have something to prove. Should defo be over here this time!

No matter where it is, playing two games at the same ground is simply daft. I shouldn't need to explain that.
England football play every game at the same ground. England RU play every game at the same ground. Are they daft?
But my point was actually if you decide to play two games in such close proximity to one another we’d have been better off playing both at Headingley as likely would have got a better cumulative crowd and potentially low operational costs.

#1 daft idea.
Playing two games in W. Yorkshire is a daft idea. But if you make that daft decision then why is two at Headingley daft? What would your suggestion be?
-
If the RFL did need to have two games in West Yorkshire on consecutive Saturdays they should have just played them both at Headingley. Would have got a better crowd than Hudds and may have reduced costs further.

Three letter acronyms work well for sports though so NRL has a nice ring to it and captures the word rugby in it which is crucial I think.

Not the greatest game, in fact a bit dull overall. But we’ve beaten a good side and had some positive performances - Johnston looks at home in an international jersey, as do the two half backs and Welsby will be a fixture for years to come. Then our pack handled a big opposition well.
This series wasn’t a ‘gimme’ and we’re 2-0 up.

A good first half from England, solid in what has felt a game that has lacked the intensity I’d expected. Tonga seem disjointed (but perhaps caused by Eng being good)
Hill has been great, I did question why he was in the squad, but he’s making good yards on every carry. Radley also solid and Bateman been hard working. Overall good performance from the pack.Shame about the crowd, looks poor on TV. I remember being in a sellout at Hudds for Eng v Ire in 2013 WC, but that seems to be the exception. Daft choice for a ground when there’s a game at Headingley next week.

I'll say it again but Ash Handley should be ahead of Ashton for me.....equally as quick but stronger, better carrier of the ball and generally safer ....they are both weaker in edge defence compared to Makinson I'll admit though
Ash Handley is one of those players that I’ve never thought looks like a natural rugby league player, used to think the same about Ben Jones Bishop. And Liam Marshall I think is just too small unfortunately for test level.
Ashton brings pace but does he have an error in him? But shows Wane was right having the four wingers! Shame we haven’t got to see Young this series.

Clearly not ideal, but with a glass half full perspective … we are having to re-configure seating in an arena for a Wheelchair international due to broadcast requirements. Not sure we’d have expected that sentence a few years ago.

19 man game day squad and they’re locked in.
Kiwis could work that angle and approach up and comers for selection, especially ones who have other options (Origin). Could be done in a warm up test for example.
Sad if is has to come to that but the appeal of being able to play Origin and then still playing Internationals for Kangaroos and/or Tonga/Samoa/Fiji is only growing, take the Mulitalo saga as a prime example.
Thanks good to read the rules in full. My biggest takeout is we need to identify talent across the globe and quickly find them adoptive parents just before they turn 18
Kenya v France

That’s more like what I expected in the first match, assume less travel fatigue and maybe more fresh faces for France in the game than Kenya?
Still looks like a positive trip overall.
