  1. I'm afraid there's definitely more chance of the tournament being postponed than of it taking place. The NRL and its member clubs are just going to put so much pressure on the pacific nations that one of them will crack and pull out. At that point continuing becomes untenable. There is apparently a meeting of the Asia Pacific RL next week, to decide on a position to take, but I think it'll all be stitched up before then.

In the unlikely event that it goes ahead, I certainly see the appeal in having Indigenous and Maori teams taking part. They'd be very competitive teams, it would have a real 'f you' to the NRL feel to it and I think the optics would be quite good, it's certainly a story to sell to the media. That said, logistically I'm not sure how you'd do it - who would even pick the squads, coaches, etc? There's a Maori RL but they're affiliated to NZRL so would be pressured not to take part, but I don't think there's a comparable body for Indigenous RL. The safest bet would be to invite the USA and Serbia (as next best losers in qualifying) to take part. Like I say, in the unlikely event it takes place at all.

Better than Parish. Especially if they can attract higher class players.

Remember Fatty Vautin who never coached a side before beat a very strong NSW with a team of "Neville nobodies"

Parish has lost the players respect. Johns x2 and SBW isn't the perfect option. A Cleary or Bellamy would be obviously preferable, but right now Parish should go.

From the outside it has appeared for a long time that Parish is out of his depth. That's not the issue, it's more that everyone seems to be assuming that because Johns/SBW were great players they'll automatically be great coaches (or even just better than Parish) when there's no evidence for that at all.

As to your claim re: respect, well, we only have rumours from Johns' friends in the media for that.

Apparently there’s a load of Samoan eligible players happy to flip from Australia and Nz if parish gets the boot. They were saying on NRL 360 that parish doesn’t let the players express or celebrate their heritage, something which is really important over there.

Selfishly, I hope parish stays as a strong roster of Samoan players plus the john’s brothers (love them or hate them they know what it takes to win, especially joey) and sonny Bill could  derail England’s World Cup chalkenge before it gets going at st James park. I don’t think we will get past Tonga anyway, be it in the quarter or semi, but I suppose that’s a different conversation!

As I said above, Johns is using the same playbook Walters used to get the Broncos job: get friends to publicly badmouth the incumbent, make it uncomfortable for him and his bosses, get questions asked of one or two players, and then slip into the job. Unpleasant.

  4. Matty Johns using the exact same tactics that saw Anthony Seibold forced out of Brisbane and the coaching job given to the inept Kevin Walters.

None the trio involved have ever coached, beyond a few skills sessions with individual players, and as much as I think Parrish is a poor coach there's no evidence whatsoever that any of them would do a better job. The public reaction is just the usual 'good player = good coach' nonsense.

That is a much better performance and very encouraging by the silktails in only their 2nd ever Ron Massey cup match.

The ridiculous amount of rugby talent available for the silktails almost certainly ensures that they will be a huge success.

Rugby League talent. There are big school and club competitions in Fiji, and rapidly growing comps for women and girls. There will be some players signing from union, but the vast majority of Silktails players will have grown up playing tgg.

    How did Dom get on?

Ran the ball in well, made a couple of errors in defence. Looked exactly what he is: a young lad, with potential, making his debut. Assuming the injured players return soon he can go back to reserve grade for a bit, work on the things he needs to, and slowly progress. The Knights know what they're doing with him.

    RIP Toots 😔

One of the all-time greats and, even in recent years, a fantastic live performer. Full of energy and brio, and still had that soulful voice. So glad I got to see him live, there are so many ska/rocksteady/reggae greats that I missed out on. RIP Toots

  8. Wednesday's always a heavy day for me as it's my day off. Yesterday, like some kind of maniac, I decided to go to an early spin class in the morning, right before I went to the boxing club. One of those spin classes that involves press ups and dumb bells whilst cycling, and where the instructor regularly comes around to turn up your resistance for you, laughing while doing so. Finished that with a bare 10 minutes to get to boxing for a heavy session. All told, it wasn't exactly an easy, gentle start to the day!

And then vinyasa yoga again in the evening. I'm as flexible as a brick, but I can now at least vaguely get into the positions without having to watch and copy the people around me.

1 more week before I allow myself to check out my weight, etc change. I'm doing it at monthly intervals rather than weekly.

  9. HIIT Strength class last night, with a pocket battleship of a woman repeatedly telling us "you're gonna hate me" - which we did! Perhaps not a typical Friday night out.

Followed that with a 1km run and some fartleks this morning when coaching my nephew's football team. I let the boys do the other sprints, etc on their own.

Time for a nice long bath.

  10. I haven't been to the gym for over 3 months, mainly due to taking on new studies alongside work, but was convinced by the Mrs to join one of her spin classes last night. That was not fun! I hadn't really appreciated how much of damage 3 months without exercise had done.

Anyway, I've got a few weeks away from the studies so will be getting back into the gym properly in the meantime. See how much of an improvement I can make in that time.

  11. Scotland v England. A game of pace, a fair bit of skill and, most significantly, almost no tarty histrionics when a firm tackle is made. And there were plenty of those.

I also got the sense that both teams were really enjoying it. The enthusiasm from both sides was great to see.

There was a noticeable gulf in ability. One reasonable team, one poor.

  12. The focus of this decision is the 18-21 year olds who move from the Academy team (U18s) to the Elite Development Squad (U21s with 3 overage players allowed) and there is clearly a problem because the EDS games are virtually non-contact and seem to serve little purpose other than keeping players out of trouble one afternoon a week. The big problem for me though is the development bottle-neck caused by a handful of teams signing every single young player they can get their hands on solely so that no-one else can sign them. Spurs, Chelsea, Liverpool and the Manchester teams are probably the worst offenders for this and it means that each year a group of players come through and find themselves with nowhere to go and no decent standard of football to play. A few years years back Chelsea signed two players from the academy of every club in the south of England - none of them have come through. If those lads were still at Luton or Wycombe then they'd have been playing first team football at 18/19 instead of wasting their time in EDS.

One suggestion I've seen elsewhere is that the FA should put a ban on anyone under 21 being transfered from one club to another unless they've played 50 first team games. That would stop this nonsense.

But the deeper issue, and I say this as someone involved in coaching youth football, is that the quality of coaching is still poor, and the attitude is still about playing games instead of training. I still see 18 year olds at pro clubs who lack basic skills like opening their body position when receiving the ball, and tbh it drives me nuts. It's a very simple thing to change and it opens up all sorts of benefits to the player in terms of what he can then do with the ball but if you get the first step wrong (ie receiving the ball) then everything you do after that will be a struggle.

  13. That's just so ambitious. A whole sport of just 10 northern teams, ring fenced forever. That should really appeal to Sky who want to sell dishes throughout England. It should really expand the fan base to astronomical proportions and should produce a wide variety of interesting fixtures of wide geographical spread. It should also encourage entrepreneurs to put their money into the game, the only question is where would they invest since there are only ten teams and they will already have their money men in place.London will be gone, any chance of Wales or the midlands will be gone, France will be gone. That is so forward looking and full of optimism for the games future, I don't know why we havn't done it years ago. A 10 team sport. What a great idea ? Small and irrelevant is the way to the future.

London are gone, Wales is gone, the midlands never started, France has been blocked.

  14. aye well there you go.

I was vehemently opposed to licencing and voiced my opinions many times. Regards my stance I was accused of being a flat capper, holding the game back, being morngy, self serving, selfish blah blah blah.

Now we find the game is taking a different direction. A direction I feel represents the whole of the game and is fairer to all. These are just my opinions.

The irony is that some of those who are now doing the whinging are the same who levelled the above accusations.

    Still... Water under t'bridge.

For the first time in a very long time I'm positive.

Has anyone opposed to the new format talked about boycotts, or the death of the game, or any of that other nonsense? No. You've won the argument, in the short term anyway, so how about simply enjoying it?

I'm not sure what's worse, moaning northerners or gloating ones.
