  1. 1...Cheer when our hooker wins a scrum 'against the head' 2..Write a 3 in the match programme against the try scorers name. 3...Keep a keen lookout at the start of the second half for the youngster selling the 'half time score' edition of the local paper. 4..Go to the farthest pick up point from home to ensure a seat on the 'match day special' bus service.
  2. Oh right....so have Town not won at Haven since then ? Perhaps I'll just go and check my very comprehensive files and get back to you.............................or not.
  3. 21/10/1950.....Whitehaven 10 v Town 17....Attendance at the Recre - 14, 564.....(.wow! ...probably a big 'Town Army').. Town team ; J.Cavanagh, Lawrenson, Paskins, Gibson, Graham, Thomas, A.Pepperell, Wareing, McKeating, D.Cavanagh, Thurlow, B.Wilson, Ivison. Town scorers: Tries- Graham 2, Thomas..... Goals - Lawrenson 4.
  4. What !!!!! ?.... I'm certain I've read on previous posts on this forum that when the Comets folded they still owed their Workington Town RL hosts a tidy sum ?...and therefore probably still do given that they no longer exist ???
  5. The much renowned 'Godfather' of our club (yes our club David) was very much against players personally dealing in contracts...he reckoned it would eventually damage the game financially.......is he being proved correct considering the wages dished out now ?
  6. There's only one Craig Barker........hey, could be a good fans song that....altogether now.....'there's only one Craig Barker'....(a top Townie)..
  7. And think he brought in the memorable Leatherbarrow ???
  8. Do you stand alone on the 'popular end' Sandy....or are there a bunch of you ????? Oh, and yes, young Marwood is much too slight for a winger at present.
  9. You only became a Townie then?....ya laal puppy.....
  10. Yes almost shouting it from the rooftops...there were a couple of Town directors at his shoulder too.
  11. That's just so true...but Paul put his heart and soul into it and made things improve....great guy, really a 100% Townie...
  12. Think Mr. Jamieson had a friend (???) within the club who was encouraging the changes......thankfully it all faded away.
  13. I recall being at Deepdale for Lancashire Lynx v Town when Jamieson was telling all he had just bought Workington Town..he ended in tears during that...so strange...sort of bizarre.. Another downer that day was someone sat way behind me kept pelting my bald heed with sweets..buggas.....maybe it was Mr J ???
  14. They were missing last night at Skolars............can't believe what I saw at the end of that match. It was 30-30 and Skolars had drop goal attempts charged down...from one of them Hunslet broke away from nr their own line...it finished 30-34.....Hunslet winning try was from a deffo forward pass, the touchie stood back to indicate forward pass...then Hunslet players berated him so he then moved into dead ball area to give try....never seen that happen before...suppose nothing can be done either.???...........just seen on Skolars sight that seemingly the Ref had called pass ok and overruled touchie...oh well hard luck then Skolars.
  15. Just seen on an Aussie sight that ex Town star of the 1950's Tony Paskins has passed away at the age of 91. Tony played in two of Towns cup finals ( v Featherstone 1952, and Barrow 1955) during the 1950's and was rated a top centre by all who saw him play. RIP Tony.....
  16. Ideal for producing/nurturing local talent Keith......if only it could be repeated in these modern times..'.modern but backward' in many ways'.......
  17. Agree the academy isn't as important as running an 'A' team...if only to keep fringe players match fit.
  18. During my years with the Academy (7 seasons) it was in the main self financing..i.e. separate banking....the main cost was transport and kits.....sometimes overnight stays e.g. versus Hemel Hempstead, Cardiff.
  19. He came to play for Town in season 1982/83.....was in truth a poor replacement for Kiwi of previous season Shane Varley...and when the Derwent Park faithfull sussed this they let poor Ged know about it, thereby he only appeared 12 times for Town.
  20. Actually Marra Ged Stokes came to these shores firstly to play for Workington Town...he made his debut on 25th August 1982 when Town beat Warrington 8-0 at Derwent Park.
  21. So.....Borough Park pitch was shortened to appease Town...? And Derwent Park has been extended to appease Reds...so it was the width of DP that wasn't acceptable then ?...and yes Tyllar did do a lengthy aqua plane to smash into the fence....ouchhhh.
