I did ask if other sports had arguments like this; do football fans argue that the winners in the soccer world cup are not the best team on the planet?

It just seemed a complete waste of typing finger skin to me.

    It is a good question.

This year's went to penalties so it is difficult to be sure about

My personal thought is that France were the better team but started slowly.

As an example, Argentina weren't the best team in 1986, but in Maradona they had by far the best player.

If Penrith and St Helens played again, and I was told I could have a million pounds if I picked the winner I wouldn't necessarily choose St Helens on the grounds they won so must be the best team.

However, and it is the most important however, there is no other game, it was all on the day.

It is only relevant for assessing the future performances of teams.

Look I‘m bored now so won’t respond again. If other people on this forum think a one off game proves that the winning team is better than the losing team then fine, but I don’t. A season long league proves who the best team is, all teams can have off days and lose against weaker teams than them. That seems quite obvious to me, but maybe I’m wrong.

It's absolutely clear and correct what you are saying.

The rules of sport aren't necessarily designed to prove who is the best. An example is boxing where a fighter who has won all 11 rounds can still lose to a knockout in the last. If this happens the judges don't award the fight to the one who had been best the rest of the fight.

In rugby league, if we wanted to ensure the best team to win we would score on tries only for example.

In soccer XG, expected goals attempts to show who was the best on the day, to analyse for future betting. Experts use this, they don't just say, x team won so they were the best. It is a detailed science.

You even explained that of course all that matters is on the day. Whoever win gets the title World Champion.

It is also why sports such as snooker, darts, play more than one frame. For one game or event something can always go wrong.

I remember when Samao beat England many were at pains to say England didn't show up etc. But now because St Helens have won it is different.

You could make an argument that he’s “10 times better than the alternatives” partly due to his decision not to lace up for England and the contribution to Saints may be lessened due to England duty.

Yes exactly. The world cup is very different as players have to play 6 games in a short period of time. It is very different to playing a one off game.

He obviously felt he wasn't able to do this at his age.

I get the impression that Sheffield's performance had nothing to do with the result, then. It was just Batley playing poorly?

They obviously played well, but it's the nilling combined with the performance against Swinton that is worrying. Also the recruitment didn't feel sufficient.

Fortunately everyone on the main board have suddenly become St Helens fans after their win in the "biggest game ever" so our nilling has gone under the radar.🙂

Seemed only one team was getting caught but hey we got the 2 points so I'll settle for that.👍 Usually you lose a penalty count heavily when you're getting dominated and that clearly wasn't the case. Felt like we were playing at Headingley for most of the game.😁

    I enjoyed the game.

The penalty try award just illustrates how Salford were denied a place in the final last year.

Hopefully they can go one better this year.

Comfortable win for Sheffield tonight. I don't see the result as a shock but the manner of it is. Sheffield have put together a really good team and I thought that was clear when they played us the other week and I think they will make the playoffs this year. Is this Batley's downfall year? They have too good a team not to come good surely.

Unfortunately Gilmour and Hooley are virtually impossible to replace with equivalent players at this level.

As an opposition fan which player(s) do you think are key for Batley now they are gone?

Halifax looked good last year and I think will be challenging?

We were completely devoid of ideas with ball in hand, Lam on occasion showed glimpses of what he can do but his half back partner O'Brien is as much use as a button on a sock, Salford even though not firing on all cylinders showed us how to play football, I am a fervent Leigh fan but I think if this is Adrian Lams best selection - no injuries -  this is going to be a long hard season for us unless we can recruit some  better players.

Watching Warrington last night they jettisoned those they believed were not good enough for SL and recruited those who were better suited to the job in hand, Leigh have signed 5 of those players who finished in 11th spot last season, enough said!

Only hope that my pessimistic thoughts get turned around, by the club, the coach and the players.

I thought Leigh and Derek did a great job tonight.

I think you make a good point about the ex Warrington players.

If they are open to improvement then it's good recruitment. But as you say,  they could be looked at as 5 players that the experienced coach of the side that finished 11th has rejected.

I think Ferguson was definitley missed tonight. I also think Pape plays better after Aaron Smith has had 20 minutes first.

Did you enjoy the game on the whole?

At secondary school in deepest Salford 1957 to 1962, it was in common use. No one really knew what it meant and indeed, the cerebral palsy charity only renamed itself in 1994, I think, from GJ's earlier post. That was 29 years ago and since then, the whole disability climate has improved out of all recognition, thank goodness.

One of my issues , though, is the apparent disparity between the grading for offences that are proven to do physical harm and those that do mental harm.

I think you make some good points John.

I think for the disciplinary it should bear some relation to how many games the injured party misses.

  9. I read posts on an RL site on Facebook. The comments were more critical of the length of the ban than here.

I must admit I have never used the offensive word in question. For me it is a matter of manners and politeness. At school it was the boys who swore and fought who used such terms.

This is spot on and sort of unusual to say the least.

This is true for the later rounds with real presentation and production but getting the CC on the red button can only be termed superb if you're grateful it's covered at all.

Of course it may be that one of the changes brought about by modern media/audience relationships is that events considered "high caliber" unusual, fashionable, on trend etc matter and everything else is quite irrelevant.

Yes I thought it was very harsh for that level.

Alex Walmsley is my favourite English player, and referees allow him some leeway if he accidently moves off the correct spot.

But Edinburgh had some good players and were a lot better than I had expected.

  11. I watched the Edinburgh game which is still on the Iplayer.

I thought they were a bit unlucky. They were penalised 3 times in possession in attack which was costly. I felt they could have won had they been a bit more experienced. Saddleworth knew how to win and to do the basics better.

However there are certainly good signs for Scotland at the moment!

McDermott ruined any chance Fev had of winning the Championship.  obvs Leigh's recruitment made a difference, and I reckon they'd have won it anyway.  But McDermott made it easy for them.  Batley destroyed Fev for an hour in what turned out to be the last game of the season.  It was only in the last twenty that Fev abandoned his plan and played some good off the cuff stuff and nearly nicked it in the end.  It would have been a shame if they had done.  Batley deserved their crack.  Who knows what the season holds?  I thought Keighley would be more of a test. 'Fax on Sunday, that'll be a better indication.

I think you gave a very accurate assessment of the Batley game.

I think Sean Long is a great coach and will possibly be the final piece of the jigsaw this year.

  13. I know our rugby league colleagues who contrubute here are based in the West of Turkey. However I wanted to pass on our best wishes and thoughts if they are reading.

I have family in a nearby town. Fortunately they are ok but they are having to sleep outside in cases of any aftershocks. The buildings are less sturdy and are vulnerable.

Syria is also affected as it happened near the border.

70% of those fans are glory hunters who  never watched the team when it was in the Second Division. Average attendance 28,261.

That's what Sheffield United get now and 10,000 less than Sunderland get.

That average attendance was excellent for the period. 1982-86 football was in decline so it's difficult to compare.

Tottenham only averaged 2,000 more in the first division for the same duration.

Obviously, if the investigation proves that City are guilty, they'll have to suffer the consequences and serves them right.

However, so far, they have been charged with alleged financial breaches, not "convicted" as it were.

If this were a criminal charge, then obviously, they would be innocent until proved guilty.

That rule clearly does not apply here, which is why, presumably, they are being treated by some as guilty until proven innocent.

I hope they do fight it and win.

I feel very uncomfortable about any possible repurcussions. I don't like punishments that hurt or affect fans.

I since read that any punishment cannot be imposed retrospectively. So would only be applicable from the season of the verdict.

I can assure you, I'm not! I've just been reading some of the more respectable journos on twitter who have been covering this for a while.

I'm not sure in terms of punishment, it's very open ended by the looks of things, those things you mention are possible also fines. There's a bit of speculation regarding the financial impact on clubs throughout the league being recompensed (i.e. teams who didn't qualify for Europe in years City did), I don't think anyone really knows right now.

2019 is the point at which the investigation opened and they stopped co-operating with the Premier League. So not as such no it's more than they haven't been charged for those years due to absence of evidence, although they have been charged for obstructing the investigation for those years. It might be the independent commission see that act as an admission of guilt in line with the preceding years and act accordingly.

It made me smile when I read that one of the punishments could be replaying games!

That could be a minefield. Maybe they may have to play the Aguero QPR game, but with everyone 11 years older!

Or the Aston Villa match last year, but with Steven Gerrard back as their manager!

There's been rumblings around this for some time now, to be honest I assumed it would just get kicked into the long grass as a fight the PL don't want to have. Maybe the moves towards an independent regulator have forced their hand into offering a sacrificial lamb?

In any case, I understand there is no recourse for appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and any appeal would be through the English legal system. However we will at least know what the potential punishments are when the independent commission rules even if the appeals get tied up in years of legal wrangling.

You are more knowledgeable than all I have read on other forums!

What punishments do you think are likely? I have read all sorts from relegation to removal of premier league trophies.

Surprisingly, they only won 3 in the period upto 2018 I think? Man utd finished second twice and Liverpool once.

Presumably anything from 2019 is safe? (That phrase reminds me of Bullseye and Jim Bowen lol)
