Queensland Cup to Super League. I'd have expected a bigger appointment from Leeds really.
That experience will come in handy in the Championship next season.

Were the roosters still at the SFS in 2019 or had they moved to the SCG by then?
They moved in that year.

All figures are comparing five rounds except 2019 club averages which are for the entire season. NZ hurts from home vs on the road figures.

A true test as to why the CC attendances are down would be try different things to see what would entice people. Better still, ask them.
Cost: Would a much lower ticket price have fans coming out in large numbers?
Attitude: Have fans got into the habit of not going to cup games for cost or other reasons and found TV a fine alternative?
The product: Is the league the main focus and cup not so relevant, fans not too fussed about it anymore.
Once reason(s) are found, solutions can be explored. Have any fan surveys been done on the CC? If RL keeps blindly doing the same thing, they will keep getting the same result or worse.

I’m surprised by the Giants attendance. I was at the game and would’ve guessed at least 5-6k
Was supping the local beverage an explanation for seeing double? How many players were on the field is a good test.
On a more serious note, I trust you enjoyed the game and the result.

There are reasons why crowds vary. It could be historical reasons, ie has the town ever been a RL hotbeaad? How strong soccer is in the area? Where clubs can do something about it is marketing & promotion. Not enough variety of opponents with just 12 sides in SL. Poor weather and financial pressures are two that may be affecting some recent gates. Taken over a whole season is a better indicator of a trend. Hopefully clubs are proactive in assessing the situation and doing what they can to maximise local interest and support.

With attendance figures, it's easy to think that modern crowds are down on say ten or twenty years ago but when you look at the data, it is often not the case at all. Perhaps its a desire to see them constantly increasing as proof the game is in good health. The slightest momentary downturn and woe, the game is in decline.

853 - Swinton Lions v West Wales Raiders
815 - Oldham v Keighley Cougars
786 - Doncaster v Midlands Hurricanes
448 - Rochdale Hornets v North Wales Crusaders
287 - London Skolars v Hunslet
Looking back on League 1 history for comparison:
Swinton 2015 : 494 (I couldn't find all attendances). Looks good.
Oldham 2019 : 633; 2018 : 505. Up on those years.
Doncaster 2019 : 660; 2018 : 830. Fair result.
Rochdale 2016 : 518. Down a bit.
London 2019 : 439; 2018 381. Not good but EssexRL covered that.
The years shown are the last full year of crowds or the latest year in League 1.

Do you really think TO can be bigger than Leeds, Wigan and Saints? Also I bet SL would give their right arm for another club as big as Hull or Hull KR.
Toronto was getting some decent crowds for a new club in city unfamiliar with RL. They could have become a big club. SL wasn’t prepared to part with said limb though. I don’t think getting another big club is as important as it should be for SL. Sure, there turned out to be some issues with Toronto but as has been the case for some time now, new clubs in SL aren’t being welcomed with an even playing field, regardless of what could potentially become.

Catalan worrying but six nations out of way and restrictions and a derby to come.
On a Catalan forum, they are concerned about attendances. The consensus seems to be that fewer English fans traveling over has hurt. Has the club reached its saturation within the Perpignan region? Also, some who traveled to watch the Catalans now have Toulouse as an option if they want to watch a SL match.

I've done a piece for the first six rounds of 2022. It does include derrières on seats but it's not all about attendances. However, rather than start a new topic, I though I'd tuck it in here.

The Championship after five rounds looks OK. Three games were postponed in round 4 and in round five I've given the Workington v Sheffield game 1,000 spectators (excluding cardboard cutouts).
Yr 1 2 3 4 5 YTD 2022 2327 2451 1539 2022 2374 2154 2019 2629 1645 1867 2494 2242 1813 % -11 49 -18 -19 6 19 So year to date, average attendance is up 19% but Sheffield haven't played at home yet and they are below average for attendances.

Hull KR's next home game vs Warrington is now guaranteed to be a sell out with just 1,000 tickets remaining and over 3 weeks to kick off.
The previous capacity of 12,500 is now just 10,500 because of the 'Craven StrEAT' occupancy of the south end but it will be great to see the ground packed out. Wire fans are welcome to enjoy the live entertainment and street food of 'Craven StrEAT' before taking their seats in the North Stand.
Thanks to Cas for the idea of cheap tickets for friends/relatives of season ticket holders it is a great way to fill the ground.
That will please Scubby who seems obsessed with full stadia.

SL attendances so far this year. Comparing 2022 with 2019, the last fully attended season.
Yr 1 2 3 4 5 2022 9696 8511 8899 7139 2019 9456 8542 7072 7187 9037 % 3 0 26 -1 Up so far. London was in SL that year so that didn't help the 2019 figure.

Ray I too was sceptical about the ability of women`s sports ability to pay for itself and feared that it could become a financial drain on the thing that earns the most money i.e. the men`s competitions. European soccer may be be able to afford that but down here where we are in a battle with other codes where every dollar counts and attracting and developing the best talent may determine who wins out in the long-run.
Given time to reflect on this I have adjusted my thinking somewhat. Firstly having seen the ability of women`s tennis and golf to co-exist with the men`s has made me realise there can be a market for both, with both having different attractions. Ladies sport should not be viewed as just the 4th or 5th best level of men`s, but with highly skilled participants has its` own attractions.
The other thing that dawned on me is that we are only at the tip of the iceberg with women`s sports participation. Without wanting to get too deep we`ve really had 2000 years of women being told to know their place and personal characteristics like submissiveness and an exaggerated form of femininity being valued above all else. These attitudes won`t disappear overnight. Women however do seem to be shaking off these shackles and antiquated notions of what it is to be a woman and as this spreads through the greater female population we are going to see vast more numbers of females participating in all forms of sport and not just the ones that were deemed appropriate for females to play in the past.
The upshot of all this if you are a young girl who enjoys the physicality of a body-contact sport in the future there will be no barriers from participating in it and this brings me back to my point I`m beginning to think we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg with female participation in contact sports. As this grows and is taken more seriously and is professionalised and talent developed to the nth degree there will be no reason why these competitions won`t be as gripping and attractive to watch in their own way as any men`s competition.
Well put Rocket.

Just pre-empting negativity - which isn't often too far away. You're absolutely right, a caveat probably isn't necessary on this one.
Hopefully, Bolsover will have some girls teams again. I think the one/ones they previously had were perhaps U14 or U15, something like that, but not last year as far as I know.
I feel the same way about a negative undercurrent some have toward the women’s game. I said a little while back there’s a future in women’s pro RL. One said he didn’t think so and not one reply of support for the possibility.
I think many see the women’s game as the pc thing to promote but with no real chance of it ever being financially viable. That undercurrent can make one preemptively defensive when discussing it but unfortunately that only adds to the perception that it’s a nice idea but….

If covid is still around when the WC looms large next year, why would they turn up when that was a dealbreaker this year? Unless they realise it would simply be too embarrassing not to attend, I think it would still be conditional.
Jon Dutton comes across as naively optimistic at times. His lack of knowledge of the inward looking mentality of Aussie RL administrators could be at the root of that. I hope his optimism is well founded this time around.

It`s been announced that Queensland Origin players will be paid $15 000 in 2022.
Is there enough public interest to get a return on this outlay? If so, I would imagine it’s based mainly on returns from tv viewers rather than crowd numbers at the game. I think some negativity to the potential of the women’s game is based on low crowd figures rather than how many would sit in an armchair and enjoy the spectacle*.
All of which makes the comparison with the game in the UK a stark contrast. No payments up yonder. I know the NRL has more income but the fact that there is no remuneration in England at all gives the impression it simply isn’t generating enough interest to warrant it.
*I personally have grown to enjoy the women’s game on the media but wouldn’t to go to a live game unless family were involved.

More Opportunities For League In New Zealand.

For a second NZ franchise I'd go for the South Is not because I live here but Christchurch has a solid RL following. Games could taken around the South Island too. Wellington would cover a large catchment area but capital cities are not the easiest markets to succeed in.
