Of when it should be have boils my gonads. But I do get annoyed when people go on about Americanisms contaminating our language. This has been happening for hundreds of years. Without Americanism we wouldn't have words such as scientist and blizzard, which we consider to be english. Also some 'americanisms' aren't, 'gotten' for instance. They are old English words which have been returned to us. I like a lot of American words and phrases anyway: 'shooting the breeze' is a particularly nice one.

Yup... last night and again this morning...."Its holiday season aga8n dear. All the bloody Brits will come down here and spoil it" said one old fella to his equally visceral missus..... just loud enough for us to hear....

Which is why I got an Irish passport. So you are shot of me for good.
I've been feverishly searching my ancestry for any hint of a get out possibilty, but got no further than Staffordshire. If only my mam had had a love affair with a Canadian airman or something when she was in the land army

Ex pats who sneer cos you're holidaying on "their" turf
Fear not: they will be back in the UK soon. We had a referendum to sort out the immigrant problem, and it will surely work both ways. And did this really happen to you?

Joanna Lumley, besides being one of the smugest people on the planet, is pinching money. She gets paid for going on exotic holidays. All she has to do is gaze at a sunset every few minutes and say 'breathtaking', and it' kerching. Also she was a sponsor of that ridiculous London garden bridge.

I like Dalwhinnie. It's very light. We sometimes stay in a cottage near newtonmore now and again, and the distillery never fails to come up with something that never makes it home.

Mountain bikers. They've ruined the paths in our local woods.

Thanks. My boss is a good lad really, he gets a lot of leeway from me as he does things with the best of intentions. He's a bit unhappy about losing me because he used me as his hitman, he's the passive introvert type and often would send me along to difficult meetings where he needed someone to hold the line stubbornly and bluntly against the creeping cuts people.
In short, he was probably my best boss simply because he trusted me. All he asked from me was to see results and utterly trusted me to get on with the job, while he had to micro-manage some of my peers to get them to do their jobs. He also wasn't shy about making sure people knew the credit was mine, not his, when things went really well.
Much empathy

I have been visiting a relative in hospital recently. To get into the place, in this instance Pinderfields in Wakefield, I had to run the gauntlet of people, some of them patients on drips: smoking. It looks and smells disgusting and goes against everything that a hospital is supposed to represent. Many of these people actually stand in front of the no smoking signs.

I used to go out with a nurse many years ago. She told me that nurses would inject patient's oranges with their own urine if the patient had been a nuisance.
I'm a retired senior nurse. I doubt it.

Raymond Chandler: ' The Lady Vanishes'. Wonderful use of language, classic plot, and an interesting social document of the times
