I still think the IMG gradings are a disaster waiting to happen. However, that is not what Hughes is arguing. He's saying that a point here and a point there and London has a chance. But give him those points and London still has no chance. Why did Hughes vote for this?

I think there's another point getting lost in this. Hughes has said London got 0.5 for catchment. Either this is correct or not. If correct, get it fixed; if not correct, fake claims damage the game and need a reaction from those in charge.

You give points for catchment and points for academy and they’re in with a chance. If they perform well on the field, that will increase fandom and viewership.

  2. I mean, there are a couple of fair points he makes.

    1) catchment criteria is a bit inconsiderate of london

    2) the 3 year calculations include the COVID year when they went part time

    3) there’s no benefit to developing players

Of course, these should have been raised earlier. But, the RFL CEO has said there can be tweaks to the gradings before the scores are revealed for 2025.

I'd be perfectly happy with three games a round on TV - 2 on Sky and one on the Beeb.

I think having televised clashes is a bad idea. It scatters thinly the broadcasting 'talent' and lowers individual TV audiences.

Agreed. Definitely not the case in the NRL. Means RL fans more likely to casually tune in to watch a game not involving their team.

Haven't they just reformed the 1895 cup to provide more knock out fixtures for League 1.?

Your evidence that there is no appetite from fans is based on what exactly ?

All Elite 1  clubs need to remain in France  and in winter but if you asked any of the players from either country  if they fancied it  I'm sure they would snatch your hand off.

Never going to happen though without funding.

Evidence = spectators, viewership, broadcast deals, sponsorship dollars. All have dropped away for the Challenge Cup. The Lord Derby used to be much bigger too. Australia no longer has any cup tournaments at professional level.

  5. @ATLANTISMAN there’s no evidence RL fans want a cup style tournament. If anything, the contrary. The thing in FFRXIII’s favour is that Elite 1 is played when the biggest consumer of RL is lacking content. The biggest thing working against FFRXIII is the language.  Record the games with English commentary, tell the stories, build the hype and get the games on Kayo Sports. This has never really been attempted. League 1 is not the saviour for the top Elite 1 teams.

I think the SL reserves only play once a month, or something like that. So we seem to be keeping one bad thing (DR), to compensate for doing the good thing (reserves) badly. DR seems even more stupid now you can do 2 week loans now.

    Interesting. Thanks for sharing.

With IMG points up for grabs for performance, perhaps we’ll get to a point of no more DR as bottom SL clubs are worried about advancing B grade clubs.

The telling thing is that the President of the IRL is basically someone fitting the job in around their actual job. I can't imagine the heads of many other international sporting bodies are working evenings and weekends in the office around another job!

This is just not true. Grant was the Chairman. A job whereby he’s paid very little to attend board meetings and attend events and influence people. Danny Kazanjian is the Secretary General and employed full time. He was previously the head of the RLEF. The IRL has other employees too, including Remond Safi (Middle East Africa), Romeo Monteith (Americas), Jovan from Serbia (Central & Eastern Europe) and Jeremy from Australia (Asia-Pacific).

    Typical RL.

It is worth clarifying, every time, that the government support was match funding.

The French Rugby League produced six magic beans instead of the money they said they would raise thus there was no government support.

It was dependent on local mayoral funding. With covid, local governments were less supportive. As such, the feds took the money away.

  9. Grant is influential. Former politician. Worked closely with Vlandys when he had responsibility for Liquor & Gaming portfolio. His reign will be remembered for the covid years. Thing is, we’ve stuffed up and we need to be better.

    1) France WC. Grant was instrumental in getting the original support. Then covid and elections led to the gov support evaporating. Whose fault is this? Should the FFRxiii have been better with managing relationships?

    2) the 2021 WC. A disaster. And they’re handing out OBEs to the organisers. Seriously?

    3) Tonga series. 3 lacklustre venues. Why were they selected? Why no dialogue from RL Commercial/RFL? Why are the fans not good enough to get a response? Why don’t our journalists ask the tough questions?

I do agree with some of the challenges around some of the scoring categories, and my view is that there should be a period of Refinement to make sure these things are doing the right things. Whether they will, we'll we'll see.

Ignoring my overarching view of whether P&R and grading are compatible, I don't have too much of an issue with it being difficult for clubs to move into SL. That's part of the point really, it is meant to root out what happened this year. I understand why people don't like the approach, but I'm not sure many could challenge the point that Super League is no better with this London team in.

I think we have to see what happens to an extent, I think the scores are relatively close at the top end of Championship and SL, and while I haven't spent any time playing around with movements, it does suggest there will be some P&R.

I agree with your last paragraph. Begs the question, would it not have been easier to allow P&L between same grading teams, rather than observing of 0.01 points — noting the above mentioned favouritism for SL teams. I’d like to think If Featherstone won the championship and a fellow B grade side like Leigh lost, that there’d be straight P&L. Instead we’ll be left counting who go the most tv viewers and the most likes on facebook, when naturally there’s higher engagement in SL than Championship.
