SERIES 1 In the 70s Patrick Macnee as John Steed returned in THE NEW AVENGERS, a series remembered for the emergence of Joanna Lumley as Purdey and a younger actor to do more of the action scenes, enter Gareth Hunt as Gambit. A more 70s style espionage series rather than the way out stuff of the original show. 1. THE EAGLE'S NEST. Steed investigates the death of a colleague while Gambit witnesses the kidnapping of Professor Von Claus. Purdey scuba dives to the remote island of St. Dorca, where a monastery hides a secret and Germany's greatest treasure. 2. HOUSE OF CARDS Steed, Purdey and Gambit, aided by a flock of rabid female pop fans who they've recruited, rescue defector Professor Vasil from under the nose of Ivan Perov at an airport. 32. GET-A-WAY Enemy agents are escaping from a high-security prison, each with a single target, and the first two happen to be Steed's best friends. Then the ringleader—the most dangerous of the bunch—calmly announces that he, too, will soon escape... and guess who his target might be? Final episode of the classic Avengers series. 33. BIZARRE A woman found wandering through a snowy field in her nightgown claims to have seen a dead man in his coffin—and the man wasn't dead. But Happy Meadows, where the man was buried, has a different problem: all of the coffins are empty! Roy Kinnear as the troubled custodian of Happy Meadows, with the delightful name of Bagpipes Happychap. This final series went as far as it could in the direction of weirdness and goofyness and went a bit too far at times. Appropriately the last scene shows Steed has his own rocket!! Steed and Tara lift off in the rocket as the series ends...bizarrely.

30. TAKE-OVER Three men and a woman called Circe politely call on the country home of Steed's friends, married couple Bill and Laura Bassett. 26. HOMICIDE AND OLD LACE Mother spends his birthday with two of his aunts, and entertains them with a tale of "The Great Great Britain Crime," wherein the Intercrime organization prepares to rob all of Britain's treasures in one fell swoop by staging a false alarm missile attack on London. Note: It was a difficult transition from Emma to Tara, director John Bryce completed only three episodes before being fired, the episodes were judged unsatisfactory. One episode titled ' The Great Great Britain Crime' was shelved, but eventually parts of it were used in 'Homicide and Old Lace'. Steed's boss, the wheelchair bound Mother played by Patrick Newell visits two elderly aunts and he amuses them by retelling a glamorous adventure, material from the abandoned episode was used and Mother filling in the missing bits made the Homicide and Old Lace episode complete. The other two episodes were re-edited and a few new scenes added to bring them up to scratch...sort of. They were Have Guns Will Haggle and Invasion Of The Earthmen. 27. THINGUMAJIG. Something is killing archeologists working on a dig beneath a Norman church, and this something has a voracious appetite for energy. Had the diabolical mastermind who invented it not let two of them escape by accident, Britain would awake one morning to see thousands of the little critters running around—killing everybody.

However she is being wooed by an enemy agent to give the impression that she is a traitor so that the army will believe security has been compromised and the computer dismantled. When Steed realizes this he sets out to clear her name, aided by a lip reader played by the delightful Aimèe Delamain.

23. TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER. A red suitcase containing a hefty sum of money, not to mention a bomb as a security device, is giving people orders—where to take it and when. Believing it is headed for "Mr. Big," Mother puts Steed and Tara in charge of tracking the case—which leads them straight back to Mother! Great episode, where a talking briefcase guides couriers to their destination. Good supporting cast, see below. Penelope Keith Arthur from On The Buses. ( Michael Robbins)

21. LOVE ALL The Ministry of Missile Deployment is suffering from a security leak when its head, Sir Rodney Kellogg, falls for plain, middle-aged cleaner, Martha Roberts, and has told her all his secrets. STAY TUNED Steed is all set to leave on three weeks holiday. As he exits his flat, Tara arrives asking how his vacation was. Three weeks had vanished from Steed's mind! Their latest target is Steed and his supposed victim is Miss King. 20. WISH YOU WERE HERE. However she finds the hotel staff have devised ways to stop them and other guests from leaving in a plot to rob and kill them or in Charles' case for his business to be taken over in his absence. Miss King leads a successful revolt of the prisoners just in time for Steed's arrival.

17. KILLER Mother's agents are turning up dead, one after another, prepackaged, gift-wrapped and dumped in a graveyard. Remak, a suspected agent-killer, proves to be more efficient than any human ever could—perhaps because he isn't human (Remak: Remote Electro-Matic Agent Killer). One episode Avengers Girl -Lady Diana Forbes - Blakeney played by Jennifer Croxton. 18. THE MORNING AFTER. 13. THEY KEEP KILLING STEED. In an attempt to wreck a peace conference, a diabolical mastermind utilizes "instant plastic surgery" to create a duplicate of Steed. His only mistake was not keeping a closer eye on the original while he had him in his clutches, as the real Steed knocks out his jail keeper and prepares a little surprise for the army of enemy agents about to descend on the conference. 14. THE INTERROGATORS Agents are being inducted into a special course—an interrogation course, established to determine the degree to which agents can withstand interrogation. Except that everyone who passes the course soon learns that all of their contacts have been murdered. And then, Tara is called in for a run through the course as well.

11. LOOK( STOP ME IF YOU'VE HEARD THIS ONE) BUT THEY'RE WERE THESE TWO FELLAS. The directors of Project Cupid (a program to create an emergency underground facility for the British government in case of war) are being popped off one by one by a bunch of clowns bent on stopping the project before it levels some old vaudeville theatres. This episode borders on slapstick comedy, O.T.T. scenes a plenty, and a cameo from John Cleese. Cleese before Monty Python 12. HAVE GUNS WILL HAGGLE When Colonel Nsonga—hot to stage a coup—arrives in Britian on the eve of the theft of several thousand brand new top-secret rifles, Steed positions himself to bid against his "old friend" for the weapons. Little does he know that it's a bid to save Tara's life, as the sellers want to use her in a live demonstration of the product! This episode was originally 90 minutes long and meant to introduce Tara King, but was deemed so bad the director John Bryce was sacked. Re-edited to standard length and new scenes made it workable.

However none of Edgefield's victims are prepared to give evidence and when Steed arrives at the Dreemykreem dairy he discovers the reason. 8. ALL DONE WITH MIRRORS Somebody is leaking secrets from the Carmadoc research institute and suspicion falls upon Steed, who has been spending some time there. He is accordingly put under rather luxurious house arrest at Mother's, whilst Miss King and her somewhat incompetent new partner Watney unmask the real traitor. There's a new invention using reflected surfaces to capture sound.

5. SPLIT! A murder takes place within the Ministry of Top Secret Information, but the level of security makes it quite impossible for an outsider to do such a thing. Then a handwriting expert confirms that documents written by Ministry personnel match that of an enemy agent slain by Steed years ago. 6. WHOEVER SHOT POOR GEORGE OBLIQUE STROKE XR 40 ? He knows there is a traitor in the organization but he has been drugged to put him in an amnesiac state and he can remember little else. Mrs. Peel investigates but she too falls prey to the drug as she and Sean are abducted by bikers. It is down to trainee agent 69, Tara King, to whom Steed is introduced by spymaster 'Mother' to help him save the day. Finally Miss King becomes his new partner as Mrs. Peel's missing husband reappears and she goes off to join him. The final Emma Peel scene, getting in a car with her husband, thought to be dead but found alive in an Amazon jungle , from behind looking a bit like Steed. 2. Steed goes to investigate, and discovers the hard way where the money has gone; to build a device capable of shrinking anything to a fraction of its normal size. While Rushton has great science- and industry-oriented plans for the device, his assistant Chivers has plans of his own... to make a profit, and dispose of anyone in his way. Steed, inches tall, manages to telephone Emma with a warning, but she is captured by a co-conspirator of Chivers, and next faces the shrinking machine. How will Steed and Emma get through this one?

21. YOU HAVE JUST BEEN MURDERED Steed and Mrs. Peel stop a clever blackmailing scheme targeting millionaires. A gang led by Nathaniel Needle, hideout in a haystack ( ouch!) , faces potential murder victims but then just leave a card saying " you have just been murdered " , the next time will be real unless they pay up. 22. THE POSITIVE NEGATIVE MAN. A scientist is killed by having been hurled through and embedded in a wall. This is the latest death of a person engaged in the government's Project 90, whose documents can also not be found.
